In no means am I in a state of nostalgia. I don't want another BF2 game. I want a game better then BF2; not a hindered, wasted, 30 minute learning curve game that gets boring in a few days. We've seen everything been redone over and over again for the past 7 years. It is getting boring.
I agree with you. At the same time, I do want another BF2 game, although, I too want it to be better. I'm going to cancel my preorder for BF3. I was really excited initially, but with the reduction of complexity it just seems like it's going to be catered toward a different crowd than the previous Battlefield titles. No commander, only 4 classes, regenerating health(do we have confirmation of this?)...meh. I'd honestly rather go back to playing BF2.

They need to make the game for competitive players and have a high skill ceiling. As how serious and hard the game is is determined by the players in the server. Look at hugely successful competitive games; CS/CSS, SC/SC2, TF2/TFC, etc. Those games at their highest levels are really challenging and take a lot of skill, but in a regular server or ladder match you can literally do cheesy things and have fun and still have a chance of winning.

Point is you can cater to both competitive & serious players and fun & casual players at the same time. They just have to have a high enough skill ceiling for the serious players to be able to do their own thing, while the casual ones can play on there own skill level.
Its not like most fps games arent easy anyways, as long as you can point and shoot you'll have a chance vs another player, unlike in games like chess where a novice will never take down a grand master.

Why did you decide on that approach, and do you plan on altering the progression in Battlefield 3?

It falls back on what I said earlier – we were much more successful with our approach than we anticipated. We didn’t think most people would hit level 22 to be honest, and especially not so fast. Our calculations on how much people would play to hit level 20, 25, 50 were completely wrong. Thought people wouldn’t play that much. We’re looking into the numbers of how we scale up, what we give away, how we give it away, with the understanding that some people put a lot of time into the game. There will be a lot more to unlock, not only weapons and other treats, but we have more things that you can unlock than in Bad Company 2, and we’re also making sure that there is a reason for you to reach the top rank. It doesn’t just end. There will be a lot of focus on persistence and how we present stuff to the player."

Reason I quit right there pretty much. I REALLY hope they do at least something similar to BF2 which took ages to rank up and unlock new things. Wish even more they did it like they first had BF2 before they patched it to make ranking easier.
I like the short gap between unlockables in BC2. There just needs to be unlockables from 1 all the way to 50. Instead of roughly 1 to 22.

I have put ~250 hours into BC2 and I'm only lvl 47(I have >4,800,000 points people...) lvling past "officer" rank is a PITA and doesn't unlock anything. i think they should make lvling more linear, instead of saying "hey from now on It'll take you 3 times as long to lvl! have fun reaching 50!" i was lvling like crazy the first few weeks, now maybe once a week I lvl...

Get where I'm going? "Streamlined" games have a lot of essential features missing.
None of those 'features' are essential. I played through the Crysis 2 campaign without even caring about any of the things you listed. Now, I also played through the first Crysis and Warhead and I also enjoyed those.

Why do you guys insist on forcefully ruining an experience based on nostalgia and what the previous game had? You're letting these pesky little things get in the way of your fun, which is what games are made for. I will agree though that Crysis 2 sucks because it's no longer sandbox and is now another COD shooter. But did that take from the fun? Not really. Is the game dumbed down and crappier than the first? Sure.

Which brings me to my point that just because someone enjoys a previous rendition of something does not mean it is due to nostalgia. You're right, games evolve. Not all evolution is for the better though. Games have evolved to become bigger money machines, not to become better gaming experiences imo
I can say the same for you. How anyone can find the originals watchable after watching the prequels is beyond me. There was nothing exciting about a bunch of troopers firing at luke/han and missing 1000x times even if they were right in their faces. There was nothing exciting about the pathetic lightsabre duels. And if you ask me, those little panda-like creatures were worse than jar jar binks.

See where I'm going here? The prequels were canon whether you liked it or not. Hating on the prequels means you hated the originals since the originals were the result of what happened in the prequels.

As for your second point, you'd be surprised how nostalgia has a large part of what people think when they play/watch a sequel. "Oh, the first doom was so much better than Doom 3. What were they thinking? I'd rather play in the 8/16-bit era than this crap!"

And for your last point, you have a point. However, again I bring back my whole point of nostalgia. Gaming has evolved to appeal to a much larger playerbase than the past. They are made to be fun for the masses. Yes, it sucks, but again, you're living in the past. Times change, as does what's popular. Just look at Rock nowadays. It's pretty much dead in the mainstream which is filled with nothing but auto-tuned pop stars and rappers that rap about nothing but girls, money, and cars.

Move on or stick to the old games. Be glad BF3 will even have prone, jets, 64 players, and PC being the main platform again. You can complain about how they're dumbing it down and commander being removed, but I'll be enjoying it because I know it will be FUN.
