Thinking of upgrading when I hit Bulldozer

Thread Starter
Right now I have an AMD 555 X2 at 4 GHz and wanting to go bulldozer when it hits. Sometime over the summer I'll be slabbing (hopefully) an 8 core bulldozer in this puppy. But, at the same time, I'm thinking of upgrading my 5850 as well.

I migth go nvidia, but seeing how the 570 and 590 are holding up, it might just be a no show. So, I'm thinking of grabbing another 5850. However, it looks like crossfired 6850s might be a better choice when we consider tessellation performance.

I game on a 1600x900 monitor and it looks like crossfired 6850s just hit the cake on all games for this resolution. I'm looking for a constant 60 fps on any game. I might upgrade the monitor, might not, but for now I'm keeping it.

TL;DR: I'm wondering, grab another 5850 or crossfire 6850s and overclock them over the summer? Currently, I can't get the 5850 past 775/1125 as its a non reference.

At 1600x900 the 5850 shoudl hold you over for quite some time - it can still handle most games out there at 1920x1080/1200.
CF 5850s or 6850s would be overkill for you IMO.

Keep your HD 5850 for sometime. No game will be running slow (except Metro 2033) at your resolution with HD 5850.
HD 6850 or 5850 in CrossFireX performs similar. Thanks to the scaling improvement in HD 6000 series.

Sadly it isn't. I used to spend years gaming at over 60FPS in the past, and frankly, 30-40 fps mins just doesn't cut it that well for the latest games.

It does play fine on most games. Most games from 2009 and before play very well. But I would like to game at a nice constant 60 all the time. While in or out of combat.

I can't seem to find any benchmarks showing the 5850 against the 6850 in crossfire. It would be nice to see. Plus the overclock headroom on the 6850 is suppose to bring it to similar speeds of the 6870 on its max overclock.

I know its over kill, but sometimes I just can't bear playing at 30 fps in heavy firefights. It just doesn't feel the same as oppose to 60.

Anyways, thanks for the input guys. The more I think about it, thinking of holding off might be the good thing. Another 5850 might be a solid buy as it would probably be dirt cheap by the time I upgrade. $150 dollar upgrade if that.

You might want to check this article from Guru3D.
Radeon HD 6000 series scales very well in CrossFireX.
90%-100% performance gain is possible in Radeon HD 6000 series.

Thanks for the link. It had 5850 crossfire in it as well. I guess I'm going to grab another 5850.

Cheers.

If you feel it's too much power you could grab a 5830, or if you don't think it will be enough you could grab a 5870.

Another possible choice would be a 5970. ;D

Personally I would pick up an HD 5870 since the price is pretty low, especially so after MIR. I would pay the extra $20 from a 5850 to get a nicer card.

Except that in Crossfire, the 5870 would downclock to match the 5850. You'd really be spending an extra $20 for OC headroom.
