Help with my first gaming build

Thread Starter
Overview:

I want to build a gaming pc with a budget of $1600 that will run games at very high/ultra settings at a 1080p resolution. I already have a windows 7 license and monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. so that does not need to be figured into the budget. I'm coming from a macbook pro, so I figure I should see massive improvements in gameplay from a dedicated gaming rig.

I'm also seeking advice on building my own pc. This would be my first build. I was going to pay a local computer shop to build it for me, but a friend advised me against it, and said I should do it myself. I'm not very comfortable building it myself, but where there is no risk, there is no reward.

Summary:

So, in essence, I'm looking for advice on building my own pc such as good resources to reference, and also I'm looking for advice on a parts list to order.

Hello,
Do you know what would yo want? I mean AMD or Intel?

Intel is a bit better but its very expencive, AMD is way cheaper, and just a bit slower then Intel...
What would you like? And I can help you build your PC.

WOW with this budget your computer will be twice as better then mines and i'm running everything on ultra already...

and you should just build it, this was my first build and took me about 1 hour to build and 2-3 hours+ if you want to make everything look good (wires and everything)

Anything specific you want, in this system?

So, I built an AMD based PC.

This would be a hell of PC. Top PC. And Its about $1620. You can change the case, since this one is quite expencive ($200) and Add one or two more HDDs and set a RAID configuration. For speed or backups...

Well I want an i5-2500k processor for sure, an SSD, a data hd, 8GB of ram, a decent cpu cooler for some overclocking, and a very strong graphics card. I was thinking about getting a gtx 580 for now and then maybe SLI when the price goes down later. I really have no idea what to go with other than that. The motherboard also has to have optical audio output for my speakers.

I've had some extra free time on my hands lately, so I may be interested in overclocking so that's why I chose the k series processor and really want a cpu cooler to reflect that.

With that much of a budget, you can get something like this. I think most people will agree with the basic setup. From this you can change the case to which ever you want (maybe you don't want a huge full tower), the graphics card (gtx 570/AMD hd 6970/even a gtx 580 are your best bet at this price range), power supply (maybe you don't plan on using multiple graphics cards in the future and don't need 850w), or a beefier heatsink if you plan on doing heavy overclocking. Anyway, hopefully the link works and you can see the wishlist.

That list seems to fulfill my needs for the most part, but I don't really need the blu ray writer. I watch blu rays on my tv, and I don't really have any need for large amounts of optical storage, so I'll probably just go with a regular combo drive and use the extra money for something else in the build.
