Looking for a AT&T Smart Phone I can get without a Data Plan

Thread Starter

I have around $150 bucks I am willing to throw at a new phone.

I would like it to be able to use wifi, have a decent camera, and a physical qwerty keyboard.

Now I was reading some older threads that talked about buying an unlocked smart phone and then throwing your AT&T SIM into it and you would be good to go.

Is this still an option? Do you guys have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide, it is greatly appreciated!

I had my eye on this phone.

That is a decent phone. Most unlocked phones should work alright for you, altho ATT seems to find a way to rip people off and throw on the 15$ plan.
May I suggest checking over at xda-developers forums.
I may have a used ATT Tilt for sale.

How did you manage that? I'm completely new to all this, I've overclocked my processer, soft modded my PSP, but this cell phone business is new to me. I thought AT&T could detect the Iphone on their network and would automatically add a data plan for you?

Thanks for the tip, I also posted over there.

So I could in theory buy this phone, put my SIM card in it and be fine?

Correct, should work fine, just make sure to turn data off, run wifi only.

This is an option on the phone I assume? To disable data.

Can you think of a cheaper better alternative phone to the one I listed?

Thanks for replying btw, I'm clueless when it comes to this stuff.

You can always check your local craigslist for unlocked phone.
Also, try over at the xda-developers forums, in their marketplace section.
I always use gsmarena.com for a reference on phones as far as features and such.
Ebay may also have some.

You can take your pick at ANY smartphone that isn't sold by AT&T. As long as it is unlocked, they won't ask you to add a data plan. If you do want data, you'll have the option to add a $15/unlimited data plan

Thanks! So do you guys have any personal recommendations? I'm looking to stay under 200 bucks.

It doesn't need to be super fancy or anything.

Also, could it be a phone that is branded by another company like Sprint?
