VMware lag issue

Thread Starter
hello i use a virtual machine to play games, mostly mmo. and when the vm is running the mmo along with the main window mmo, it lags really bad, the setting for vm is 2core cpu 2gb ram 100gb hdd, it is really smooth when no games are running on main window, but i get around 7 fps on vm main window games are up.

is this an issue? are there better software for these type of usage?

Is your Virtual Machine also Windows 7? 64 bit or 32 bit? Try upping the VM's RAM to 3GB and let it have all 4 cores, see if that helps. I'll check this out again after I get some sleep. My brain isn't working to well after playing Multitask and Multitask 2 (thanks to another thread here on OCN).

Did you install VMware tools in the guest VM? That will install the appropriate drivers in the guest VM that will smooth out mouse actions.

Allocating more hardware to the VM is only needed when the VM is starved for resources, and by the sounds of it it is not. Gaming with acceptable performance is not really possible with today's hypervisor technologies, and it will likely be some time before real hardware rendering is doable in VM's.

vm is running on window xp, from the looks of it, it is only using total of 800mb of ram including the game. if i put 4cores on it it will also lag my main window, i will start getting spike because 4cores is all i have, HT is not on due to extra heat.

What is the game?

You should look into enabling the 3d acceleration in the VM, I think you can do this by going into the vm settings and I think under the second tab there should be a place where you can adjust the display settings, and you can poke around there for the 3d settings.

I just had to nuke my OS a week ago; I should be able to get vmware up and running soon and can give better directions then.

I knew I was forgetting something last night. Did you do this?

I don't get how it will start causing your Host OS to lag because I can have 6 VM's open at the same time and my host still doesn't lag, and I'm only running a dual core processor.

In the settings for your VM, click on "Display". There should be a setting there to Accelerate 3d Graphics. If that doesn't help, try clicking on your processor in the Settings Tab and selecting a different "Virtualization Engine". I had a VM a while back where that fixed a lag issue when at the Guest OS Desktop. I don't remember which one because I've had too many in the past 3-4 months.

yes the 3D display is checked,

the game is vinidictus, a very well optimized mmo, my gpu runs on 40% on it, so i think it isnt the game problem.

maybe vm is not for gaming much.

Yes, you shouldn't be gaming in a vm, it just doesn't work like that.

any vm alike software that can be used for light-med gaming? i mean having a super computer is waste of money unless you can multi-task like crazy, get what you paid for right?
