Not really. If she gave him a chip that was completely incompatible with his board, or something he had no use for, that would be one thing. This, (especially to someone who's not tech savy) will come off more like nitpicking.

Granted this is OCN, but this just seems like one of those situations where you should be happy to be getting a free piece of hardware to begin with.

Wrong.

First off, this isn't nitpicking. If she gave him a 2500k, I could totally understand. This is a 5.0Ghz versus 3.4Ghz. Huge difference.

Second, how exactly is it free? Why don't you think about that.

I think its a great gift ( she probably has no clue the difference) Anyways that processer should be all you will need for a while. If you must overclock , sell it and get a k.

And that's another thing. Why buy someone an item you have no idea about?

That's almost troll bait.

It's like me buying a dress and expecting my girlfriend to like it.

That's just evil.

I ram my i5 2500 4ghz on all 4 cores 24/7 using a 38 x 105 frequency.
The non-k chips can be OC'd using the max turbo multi as the 24/7 multi and then seeing how far the BCLK will go... I think on a 2600 its 39 right? So 39 x 100-107 (doubt youll pull a higher bclk than that)
Will hit at least 4ghz...
You know, I think now that unlocked multipliers are out half of the world forgot how to overclock. Originally, on Intel chips and non Black editions from AMD, this above is how to over clock, increase the BCLK. Did the "K" wipe everyones mind. I am not trying to be rude here but this is an Overclocking forum.

You can overclock, but only 5%
So a 105 bclk instead of 100

And yeah this is OCN >>so we all know it wasnt the right cpu, ( but hey he could still sell it and get what he wants)

Old CPUs like AthlonXP 1700+ could be overclocked with pencil mod (have done this many times). Maybe new Core i7 2600 too?

Not for any practical purposes. I mean a stock 2600 is more than adequate for gaming/day to day use. Other than benching and maybe encoding, he's not missing out on much.

He has a perfectly functional, "high end cpu" (by non-OCN standards ).

Well I don't know how they handle their cash situation, but since it is a gift, I'm assuming she paid for it herself.

Believe me, I see the logic behind your point, but emotions aren't always logical. Considering the OP is here asking how to OC it, I'm guessing he'd rather not open that can of worms either
