Who says AMD even intends to compete on a clock-to-clock basis? There is a reason they are adding more cores and moving to lower overall clock speeds: performance per watt.

In many respects, the Bulldozer architecture is comparable to a diesel engine. Lower RPM (clock-speeds), high torque (instructions per second). When implemented, Bulldozer-based processors could outperform competing processor architectures at much lower clock speeds, due to one critical area AMD seems to have finally addressed: instructions per clock (IPC)

If you look all over the AMD site the message is clear, performance per watt is king, and has been since quad core opterons in late 07. Don't forget that this is essentially a server CPU in a client socket.

The source you quoted is really old, since then AMD released a lot more info on BD that many knowlegaeble people have surmised as showing higher average clock speeds for BD. Of course high IPC is important, but wouldn't it be better to have high IPC and high clock speed?

Not exactly good, look what happened when Microsoft rushed to get the 360 out faster than the PS3, red rings all over the place, lets hope intel doesn't make this mistake and rush production, other than that I will be buying a BD...

Not hoping Intel will push it, but would laugh my AMD off if they did and failed miserably.

Yeah even Intel had to recall their OWN boards for that one. SB may be a beast but for 30 days it was weaker than a newborn.

This could lead to some monster overclocks, if it is done right and if you are correct.

So much speculation. I can't wait to get some HARD numbers down to actually see how well it licks the butter.
