Unofficial Fedora 15 (Alpha) thread

Thread Starter
Hey guys!

I'm involved in some of the packages in the latest Fedora release. If you haven't heard by now, Fedora 15 Alpha has been been released and is available for you to help test (and improve!) today.

You can download the Alpha here:
http://fedoraproject.org/get-prerelease

Please keep in mind that this is a pre-release version of this distro. There WILL be bugs, and we're hoping that you guys can help us squash them with a vengeance. With this in mind, please do not install this on a production system. We all know the how the beta experience can be with software, and, well, this isn't even that far yet.

If you are an experienced Linux user, I would love for you to download and install. Play around in it every chance you get, and PLEASE REPORT ANY BUGS! You can report bugs you find at the Red Hat Bugzilla.

You can keep tabs on Fedora 15 Alpha development here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora..._release_notes
This wiki includes information on the release and an ongoing list of Known Issues. Reference this before reporting any bugs, if you would.

Assuming things stay on the track we have going right now:
Beta release: April 19th.
Final release: May 24th.

Oh yeah! The Alpha includes GNOME 3 if you want to check that out before it's officially released! (or KDE 4.6 if that floats your boat, and is my personal preference)

Thanks guys!

just wait till ubuntu moves to wayland for the display server and drops xorg to a secondary role i believe fedora has already said they would follow in this act after shuttleworth announced 11.10 or 12.04 (not sure which one) will start using wayland instead of xorg as the default display server.

I'm looking forward to this. Wayland has the potential to solve a lot of problems, not the least of which is that X is long past the point where it should have died a natural death and desperately needs to be killed.

i dont think xorg is broken

if its not broken, dont fix it...

newer software some times means more complicated software... wait until you have to get the source, patch it, and recompile it just to fix a simple autoconfigure blunder... do-able, but why not just open up xorg.conf and change a value

EDIT: but i will start reading up on wayland just incase lol
Kinda meh now...

oh xorg is an absolute mess...

its rather slow and bloated, and can't handle a lot of things without the use of some serious hacking done by distro maintainers and the various DE/WM groups...compiz/beryl were actual in response to the lack of compositing abilities in xorg (even there was a good amount of hacking that was done to xorg to get it to work correctly.)

this is a good thing, xorg should've been retired in 1996 its been around for forever!

Even though I never switch to the newer release until after the final, I might check this out. I'm interested in what gnome3 will bring, and especially wayland whenever that gets added. And about time they brought in LibreOffice.

I can't wait for F15. So long as the eDP bug for Dell E-series laptops present in F14 gets fixed, I couldn't even run F14 on my laptop. I'm still running F13 (or was until my SSD borked up...waiting for RMA...)

I really like the direction the linux industry seems to be moving lately. I've been reading up on Wayland a bit and personally can't wait, it will open up so many more possibilities. LibreOffice is looking like it's coming along pretty smoothly. I'm interested in what it'll look like as they try to break away from the OpenOffice code-base more.
