Overclocking my GA MA790XT UD4P - Page 2

I don't get the part about unlocking 4 cores, don't I have to upgrade to quad core? Pretty sure there's an empty slot in there waiting to be upgraded..

No. The CPU in your system is a single unit. Inside there are cores. Right now you have a tri core chip. They are in reality quad core chips but have either been binned in the manufacturing process due to a defective core/stability issues OR binned due to needing to meet the demand of the tri core chips.

The feature you'll want to look for is the ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration) function in your BIOS in order to test and see if the 4th core is disabled due to stability issues or disabled due to needing to meet the demand for that chip. Sometimes they'll unlock totally, other times it'll unlock but you'll need to slightly raise your vCore (Core Voltage) in order to make it stable and even sometimes it's just totally crippled and won't work (again this is a manufacturing defect and why they bin the chips).

This is an easy way to get a "free upgrade" on your chip but keep in mind that it doesn't always work and I've heard figures from between a 60-70% success rate. BUT keep in mind those figures may be a bit skewed due to people not reporting failures and only reporting success in unlocking. But anyways, unless you need the extra core (ie. for something like BOINC or F@H) then it's just all about the e-peen since IMO there's nothing really that would benefit from 4 cores aside from some workstation programs, video encoding, and some games (I can think of 1 or 2 off the top of my head right now).
