what should i expect from a 955 c3 on watercooling? - Page 3

this is what my mobo looks like, it has a nice copper heatsink that runs all the way down, i have a 120mm fan at the back of my case, moves ALOT of air, pretty noisy sucker.... then a cheaper fan under my vid card blowing air up against the mobo and up to the card there, so by VRM i would assume you mean the stuff that this copper heatsink is connected to for heat dissipation???

Put a fan right on top of that mosfet heat sink, like this:

Keep in mind you have 4+1 phase power, I blew up several boards with 4+1 phase power with my 965 before I got a old Gigabyte DDR2 board with 8+2 phase power.

If you blow it up the pickings for DDR2 boards are very bad, they're all 4+1 anymore. Try to find a used board with 8+2 if it comes to that...

if my mobo craps, idk what i will do, will piss me off, because my ddr2 ram was 110$ for each 2gb's, and i got 4 gb's, and i have never got to use them past 800 mhz, was not my plan, but stuff does not always go as plan, and a fan as you say there, i think it would not hurt, i do not know what the mosfets look like and all that, this whole mosfet and vrms and stuff was not really a problem back when i looked into the 9950,

are you saying that heat is the enemy with those "mosfets"?

but if my mobo went, i would just buy a ddr3 board,

Heat is a major factor...

The other is the simple fact that 4+1 wasn't designed to handle the amount of power your 955 is going to draw at 4+Ghz.

Not trying to be a downer for you, but I blew two ASUS boards and one MSI board all three had 4+1 with my 965.

I bought this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128387 off ebay for $72 used and it took my 965 like a champ, then I dropped a 1090T in it and it took that to 4.5GHz full load stable never blew up. I broke the socket though on accident which is how I ended up with an Intel chip

The mosfets, they just can't handle the power draw.

Heat is one thing, pushing more power through an electrical component than it's designed to handle is another...

Just look at the Nvidia forum or use the search feature for "GTX 570 died", same issue with them. 4 phase power delivery for the gpu just isn't enough for the higher overclocks, resulting in blown mosfets.

Depends on your usage really.

I wouldn't try folding on it or running prime/linx or anything that would max it out.

You might get away with it at 4GHz with just normal gaming load though. It's a tough call, I'm sure some people can skate by on it, but when you're on a old socket the cost of a mobo failure is often DDR3 + a new board

Don't worry about it, it's not that big of a performance increase.

What I would do personally is plan for a failure. Start saving up to either go DDR3 on AM3 or AM3+ then upgrade to bulldozer next year or something.

Until then I'd run it at around 3.8GHz which you should be able to do with around 1.3v, then bring your NB up to 2.6 or 2.7GHz using 1.2v on the CPUNB.

That should be enough to push your 5850 in most titles out today.
