6950 possible unlocked card

Hi
thinking of going back to Red team.

my choice would be 6950 and unlock the shader. but im not sure which one would unlock and which one is not.so it would be better if I ask all the expert here.

here is my choice:

Go for the XFX 2 Gig or the MSI 2 Gig card. They should both unlock easily. The last XFX 1 gig you have won't unlock. XFX has the double lifetime warranty and MSI has 3 year by serial. You pick which type of warranty basically.

The last one I doubt will unlock. The top 3 looks like reference design. The MSI one has a red PCB, which confuses me. I thought all reference design has a black PCB with AMD logo on it. I could not zoom it to see if it has AMD logo and two BIOS switch.

http://www.cclonline.com/product/54764/2GB-RADEON-6950/Graphics-Cards/CCL-Choice-Radeon-HD-6950-2GB/VGA0177/

The one above looks more promising to me to unlock. It has black PCB with AMD logo from what I could tell. Not sure what brand that is though, but being reference design, it hardly matters - just the warranty in case anything goes fubar.

im about to go the same route

from my research all 1 GB models are new pcb design which from start have only 1408 shaders ... ( AMD was in a rush to get more market share so the initial black pcb 2 GB 6950 is actualy a 6970 with the shaders locked from the bios ... im talking about the gpu chip ... )

I decided to go with a PowerColor PCS++ card that comes factory unlocked ( dual bios, secondary bios is with shaders unlocked ), it also has 1 8pin + 1 6pin connector like the 6970 ( instead of 2 6pin connectors like most 6950 ) so it can draw power like a regular 6970 and best of all it has diff coler design thats slightly better then ref model in terms of cooling and noise

Theres still a diff between 6950 and 6970 in terms of memory Mhz ...
6950 has its mem speed at 1250 Mhz from the factory
While the 6970 has its mem speed at 1500 Mhz from factory which AMD then down clocked to the 1375 Mhz for the card

But the memory can be over clocked really well on a 6950 in most cases easily reaching 1375 ( average is like 1450 Mhz and some got em to 1600 Mhz )

1 tip I would give if u get it and plan to over clock ... don't go bananas and look for high clock settings cuz ur performance will hurt ... theres a sweet spot u must find cuz since model 5xxx AMD cards don't show artifacts from mem over clock, instead it just recalculates the frame ... so at some point more MHz from ram will decrease performance

Actually even 1GB 6950 can be unlocked, even non reference model. It's just a matter of luck. But the best cards to unlock are the ones with dual BIOS switch.
