Downgrade?

Recently, a buddy of mine decided to make a dedicated computer strictly for his business. His business requires him to multitask alot, so he got the 965 off Newegg (this is before stepped in) and went to work putting it together. After I saw his purchases, I realized that he would probably be better off with the 1090T.

To make a long story short, I was thinking of giving him my 1090T in exchange for his 965. I only use my desktop for games and hardly multitask. He also offered to throw in an additional $50 to "sweeten" the deal.

So what should I do? I'm not sure if I'm ripping him off or ripping myself off.

Well, does he do stuff that's more multithreaded? If so, he could benefit from the 6 cores while you would benefit from the raw speed of the 965.

You would not see a big drop in gaming performance since the 965 is notorious for hitting 4ghz+ If its a buddy sure why not do a straight up trade, u'll be helping him out if you can think of something to do with $50 will sure why not.

His business requires him to use Adobe products. He usually has After Effects and Photoshop open 24/7, and occasionally 3DS Max.

He doesn't need 6 cores for that, I have 3D studio max, photoshop, and AutoCAD 2011 running at times (granted not 24/7) and have been perfectly fine with no lag or delay on the 955BE O/C'd to 3.8GHz.

He should be fine with the 965.

Not a bad idea I'd say, then. If you want to help out a friend I'm sure that it would be beneficial for intensive adobe work. If you've got a good heatsink you can OC the 965 to great speeds and it'll perform well in games at stock anyways.

Well, keep in mind, the 965 has HT, so it has 8 logical cores vs. the 6 physical cores of the 1090T. Doubtful that the 1090T would be much better for him--it would depend on the specific things he does with it. Define multitasking. And how much RAM does he have? The 4GB that you have wouldn't be beneficial to true "multitasking."

To be honest, the 965 rig should hold advantages to yours in almost every respect. I would say that your board + CPU is less valuable than his board + CPU, based on a retail cost perspective and also capabilities. So I don't think it's fair to also take $50, since you'd have the faster clock-for-clock and higher overclockability if you took the i7 setup.

EDIT--are we talking i7965 or an AMD 965? Methinks AMD now, depending on the responses posted while I was writing mine.

That's understandable, but do I really need 6 cores for gaming? Granted, though, it was a big step up from my old 9750.

Excuse for me not being more specific. The processors in question are the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition and the Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition.

Yeah, sorry about that--I just had i7 on my mind.

Hmm...that changes things. Then I do think that the trade terms are decent--he might benefit from an x6, but I feel like he'd benefit from RAM more--how much RAM does he have?
