Overclocked CPU but didn't touch RAM. Have I bottlenecked my PC?

Hi All,

New to overclocking but recently decided to overclock my AMD 955 BE on a Asus M4A89GTD/Pro to 4.0Ghz stable. Since I didn't change any of the voltages or frequencies on any of the RAM settings, I was just curious to know if it's safe to leave things as is or if, when overclocking, I should be looking to also overclock the RAM as well for optimal performance.

Have I limited or bottlenecked my computer by only overclocking the CPU and not the RAM?

I'm currently running Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333 RAM (4x2GB sticks).

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Thanks,
SaGe69

Overclocking your ram will see hardly any benefit at all, nothing noticeable at all. I'd leave it as it is My ram is at stock

1333mhz is more than enough.

Well.. i've only recently started overclocking myself, but from what i've read in an overclocking tutorial it's even necessary at times to downclock your RAM (overclocking the ram might even fry it if it's not good enough to handle it).

so i'd say you're not bottlenecking anything. anybody know better, i'd like to know myself.

EDIT: ninja'd twice

leave the ram as it is, and try to get as high CPU/NB frequency as possible
and if you want to get that little extra performance overclock the ram by lowering the timings.

Thank-you all for your prompt and informative feedback gentlemen Even though I can probably squeeze a little more out of the 955 BE, I think 4Ghz is a nice, even number

Cheers all,

Short - not really, but overclock the CPU-NB you will get a boost (there was a thread around here a while ago where the guy went from 2000mhz cpu-nb to 2800mhz and he got like on average 10fps in games....2800mhz is really the fastest you will get out of the denab chip, just remember safe cpu-nb voltage is the same as the cpu itself - 1.55v, you should no need more than 1.4v in extreme cases
