Overview of my first OC

Unable to wait the 24hours for my Heatsink to arrive I jump into my BIOS with the stock Intel cooler

I read around a tiny bit and saw mostly that the Q9550 multiplier couldn't exceed ~8-8.5 and instead you must increase the FSB, okay no big deal.

I go in hoping not to spend 20minutes in the BIOS and set it up quickly leaving a lot of thing in a default or auto setting, I boot up and everything seemed okay except my GPU - screen res was at minimum and my card wasn't being recognized by EVGA Precision. I go back into the BIOS thinking its the voltages I didn't mess around with - I change the voltages to something very close to what they were on default anyway and then I see that my FSB and Memory clocks were Linked and I think I had overclocked my RAM a bit as well, I just unlinked it and let the Memory go as default speed and when I booted up it worked fine!

Since I'm still new to OCing I was just wondering what I did wrong that caused my GPU to go a bit crazy.

Thanks

When OCing, unlinking the mems definitely is something you need to do to ensure you get a stable OC. Since the issue went away (did I read your thread right?) when you unlinked it, that is definitely the reason why.
