[Complete] Project "Small Box" programming workstation

As some people here have seen from build logs and advice on builds a lot of my experience comes from "Workstation" builds where people need a computer for very specific purposes, these are frequently for stock trading where you're dealing with large data streams, etc. This build is for a co-worker of mine who is starting up his own programming firm. Everybody calls him "Smalls" which is where the our name for this build comes from.

"Small Box" started with the simple goal of running Visual Studio 2010 as fast as possible, needed to drive 3 screens or more, and two of them needed to be high performing for when they are testing out games they've programmed. Using their budget, "Small Box" was born.

CPU-Z validation can be found here for detailed specs. I've already gotten confirmation from Smalls that "Small Box" will boot his Windows 7 phone emulator in less than 5 seconds. I love when computers work like they should.

I love the HAF series of cases, this 922 looks pretty serious, but does allow a little peak at what's hidden inside.

A full shot of the internals. Yes that's the stock heat sink for the i7-970, they're a PITA to attach properly unless you have a freakishly long screwdriver (which I don't), so the next time I do a 970 build I'll be sure to include a good after market heat sink or I'll invest in the screw driver to attach it more easily in the future. The CPU only hits 60C under full load after 6 hours with the HSF set to "Quiet" mode. "Performance" mode was about twice as loud and only shaved ~5C off the temps.

I am also a big fan of the ASUS Sabertooth motherboard for being a fantastic board for the money. 5 year warranty, ASUS support, great connections. My ONLY complaints are the ugly color (IMO), and that even though the board has three PCI-Ex16 slots, it can only run SLI, not tri-SLI (this is based on what I've read, haven't tested this first-hand though).

Speaking of awesome connectivity, the back panel I/O on this board is great. I like that they include a PS2 keyboard port still on the board for better compatibility with keyboard enthusiasts or if your USB keyboard doesn't work in the BIOS. Since there are two GPUs in here, there are 4 DVI ports, but I put some caps on the lower pair because I knew they wouldn't be getting used right away. I also really like the floating expansion port just in case you want to add in additional ports or some other expansion slot device (fan controllers, running wires out the case, etc).

But other than that, very nice build. I love the look of the 922, it's a sharp looking case.

I actually noticed it after I took all the pics and I did fix it before I delivered it, but I didn't snap another picture. I'm OCD about that kind of stuff to which is why my builds have ridiculous cable management, I was just too rushed to re-shoot pics.
