$1000 AMD build. Ordering 4/4/11, please help me finalize (newegg)

Hey all - build for a friend (adobe suite, graphic design, media editing, minimal gaming and media veiwing). Photography major, also involved in architect design work.

Budget - $1000 (or as close to as possible)

Desires - fairly high-quality components, SSD for O/S, overclockable, 8gb+ RAM

Here's my current build:

Phenom II x6 1090t + Sapphire 6850
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.624682
ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 AM3 890GX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131631
G.SKILL Ripjaws X 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 F3-10666CL7D-8GBXH
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231440
OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD3-2VTX90G 3.5" 90GB SATA II MLC SSD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227601
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136284
LITE-ON Black 24X DVD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106335
Antec TruePower New TP-650
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371021
COOLER MASTER Storm Scout
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119196

and I'm having a lot of trouble deciding upon a CPU cooler (~$30-40) I currently have this in the shopping cart:
XIGMATEK Gaia SD1283 120mm
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233082

Total price $1034.74 plus $9.02 in shipping
this includes $79.18 savings in promo codes and $105 in combo/instant savings. There's also a $15 mail-in rebate on the CPU/GPU combo, but I never count on those.

That seems to be like a great build to me with lots of savings and quality choices. I've been leaning towards the Thuban build over a SB 2500k because of the extra cores performance in multitasking and the ability to get a MB with top-level features, plus the ease and familiarity of setup/use.

Questions:
1.) Is that Xigmatek Gaia going to be enough for the 1090t? Would I be better off with the Tuniq Tower LED 120 for only $10 more
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-002-_-Product

I'm not too keen on there only being a 3pin power connector - I like my MB to control the CPU fan speed. But it is a big saving and a fairly good cooler right?

Any other possible suggestions?

2.) Is that SSD + HDD combination going to do well for now? He has external HDD's for his backups now, so I'll be installing the following:

90gb SSD:Win7 x64 Ultimate (plus web browser, Office, etc)
1tb HDD:
- 100gb partition for Win XP x64 (secondary O/S in case Win7 fails)
- 100gb partition SSD backup
- The rest for programs (Adobe etc) and games and the like.

External HDD's for media storage and further backups.

I personally try and keep my HDD's to approx 50-60% capacity in the interest of preservation - they seem to run better for longer. Is it the same with SSD's?

3.) Anything else? I've chosen the WD Black because the Samsung F3's are out of stock, chosen the Antec TPN650 over the corsair 650TX because it's $10 cheaper, is partly modular and has a single 12v@52a, plus my TPN750 is wicked, the Storm Scout for all the savings, black interior, decked-out fans, cable-management, etc, the Sapphire 6850 for its wonderful price/performance and ability to OC w/ voltage increase to hit 6870 speeds like mine, and the RAM for the CL7 timings (I'll OC the mhz as far as the timings will take me).

Thanks to you all for all your help. Apologies for the detailed post.

Ben

Absolutely recommend waiting for the Vertex3 / C400 SSD Drive.

I recommend swapping the Samsung Spinpoint drive in for the WDC black - the samsung is faster and cheaper. I realize it's out of stock, but I think you can shop around and find another one on the web (amazon?)

Have you thought about making the jump to 1866 memory?

Any room in the budget for the crosshair iv? If you're using the 1090t I assume you want some major overclocking headroom, and the crosshair iv is absolutely amazing to pair with it.

This looks about right actually. 1090T + 6850, solid state drive, great motherboard choice with experimental AM3+ support, 1TB HDD, good PSU, good case, everything I would expect for a $1000 build on AMD

To answer questions:
1. Xigmatek GAIA should be a good choice, it should be somewhat higher than the Hyper 212+ due to 3 heatpipes actually being more optimized than 4
2. Yes but I would take the Samsung F3 1TB for $60 for HDD - it is faster for cheaper. About the SSD, likelihood is you will never ever need more than 50-60GB for an optimized OS (Windows 7 preferably) and programs. I only use some 40GB on my SSD and I run plenty of programs and even some games on it. Get a 60 or 50GB; I recommend

. Spend the extra money on a 6870 or something.

Thank you Aesthetics1 but I'm ordering today, and preferrably through Newegg in one single order, so I need a HDD and SSD available today.

I doubt there's room for a Crosshair IV in my budget, but in terms of overclocking what does it REALLY offer over the board I picked, given that I have a BE processor chosen and it has 8+2vrm 8-pin 140w, crossfire x8/x8, SATA 6gbs, USB3, etc etc. I'm expecting the 1090t to hit 4ghz at least honestly ...

Why would the jump in memory be worthwhile? I notice you have some, but is the performance difference that much given you run CL9 whilst the 1333 runs CL7. I've always seen the sweet spot for AM3 RAM being 1333-1600 CL6 or CL7 with a high NB overclock.

Thanks for the response mate

Cheers xd_1771. Glad to hear. So you don't think I need to change anything? What about the CPU cooler? I know it won't be as cool as yours but I should reach similar speeds right? Even @ 1.45-1.5v that cooler should handle the 1090t I'm guessing. The Thuban's run cooler than my C2 chip and the Dark Knight handles it @ 1.5v well enough.

I would stay with the WD black personally! Plus you could most likely get away with a smaller SSD if its strictly for OS=office. But a 90 gb wont go to waste ,as they fill up fast!

Solid build, but waiting for BD and the C400/Vertex3 might be worthwhile.
