ASUS DirectCU Noise

Thread Starter
I purchased one of these puppies recently. It works just fine, temps are great, etc. However, the fan seems to be making two different noises: the fan noise, which sounds as any fan should, and another noise, which I can't even describe. Gravelly, maybe?

Anyways, the second sound is the annoying one. It increases in loudness when the fan is increased from 25% to 40%. After that it stays at the same volume. It's not coil whine; I've had plenty occurrences of that. It happens while idle and under load.

Should I chalk it up to the DirectCU cooling system, or is it a defect that can be RMA'd? Thanks.

Which card is it exactly?

My 460 DirectCU didn't make any annoying or strange noises.

Err, sorry. Thought I had it in the title. Yeah, it's a 460.

Suppose I'll be RMAing it then, unless someone else chimes in. Anyone have any experience with their RMA process?

Their RMA process is typically very good.

It sounds like the fan might be unbalanced. The box/box the box was in was probably dropped and the card was jarred just right to unbalance it. Just RMA it.

+1 to an RMA, could be a bad bearing on one of the fans, but doesn't sound like something you should be expected to tolerate.

Yep, I filled out an RMA. Thanks guys.

Anyone know what I'm likely to receive from ASUS? The same card fixed, a refurb they have laying around, a new card? I will probably end up selling what they send me, so here's to hoping for the latter.

If they have one available, refurb. If not, you'll get a new card. The turn around on fixing yours would be too slow.
