Well I didn't exactly say faster, but to me, I always saw it as something more capable. I'm not really a techie though when it comes to these things so I guess you would know more than me

From what I've read the PS3's GPU is roughly equivalent to a 7900 GTX in terms of processing power. The HD 6850 would run laps around that card. The only reason the 7900 GTX seems so powerful in the PS3 is because of console optimizations.
It is a lot better for the GPU, but you have to think consoles work differently. The games are coded FOR the consoles so can be optimized and perfected (designed) for it as opposed to being scalable for a random variety of PC's. That's why games like GT5 have absolutely amazing graphics that I doubt any current PC would be able to run smooth. The Cell processor has a lot to do with it as some cores do graphics work too. It's too complicated for me to go into I don't know enough about it only basic stuff

consoles are crap now adays they will be bring nerw one out... but if ppl where smart put ur money in to a pc way better graphics...
Uh... the 6850 is probably the equivalent of two PS3's graphics cards, if not more. Plus, with some luck you can overclock it.

No, not really. 1.5x times, maybe, not more. I recall the game Need for Speed: Most Wanted, released in late 2005, for both the Xbox 360 and the PC, and already then it was common knowledge that the PC version looked a bit better, not much better, but you could notice the difference. And from then on, it was all downhill.

For your information, I can play Crysis and Crysis Warhead fluidly on a Pentium 4 3.4Ghz (single core), 2GB of RAM and a Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB (a card from 2006, the same year the PS3 came out - and very much equivalent to what the PS3 has inside), with quality settings that would be impossible on a console. And it could even be better if I had the 512MB version of that same card. So, no, a GPU on the PS3 is not 3x faster than an equivalent on a PC. That's a myth Sony and Microsoft would like you to believe. They do have an advantage with the Multicore CPU's, but even that is not an advantage anymore.

You can do all sorts of trickery with clever coding, but there is only so much you can do. One thing they optimized for was taking advantage of the multiple CPU cores in both consoles, but even that can only do so much, the rest is GPU work.

AND, it's true that the PS3 has more personalized coding for it, but the processing power is severely hampered by the lack of RAM and VRAM. It was an epic mistake both Microsoft and Sony made.

The games could look much better if they had given the consoles, say, 768 or 1Gb of total memory. A lot of GPU and CPU processing power is actually being wasted because there is no storage room for textures, etc.

The hardware can actually take advantage of more RAM. A 7900GTX can take advantage of 512MB all by itself, now you still have to have room for the OS in the main memory + other game data. Even an extra 256mb of RAM would make a difference.

A few months ago one of the manufacturers (I don't recall if it was Sony or Microsoft) even rewrote big chunks of the OS for it to occupy less RAM, so the game developers could access more RAM. That is how critical the situation is with consoles.

Wow, with all do respect you have absolutely NO IDEA what your talking about.
Xbox 360's and PS3's are computers, with branded hardware and software framework.

Thier actual components are quite slow compared to a gaming rig.
Correction. Very slow.

The Cell 7 isn't too shabby for its age, but a 256MB GPU is a dinosaur.

PC's could run it smooth and as good but it would have to be a better card then a 7900GTX for the PC to replicate the quality. Again because of the console optimization.
Say if a PS3 has the equivalent of a 7900GTX in it a PC would need say a 9800GTX or something along those lines to be able to produce the same graphics quality and smoothness.
Again its all subject to game, hardware and many other variables.
