Just got a 2nd GTX 580 but need help setting it up

Thread Starter
Okay my current setup is in my sig rig. I have a new 2nd EVGA GTX 580 courtesy of evga stepping up my old GTX 480.

So the problem I'm having is that my motherboard is the EVGA X58 LE (141-BL-E757) and it has 4 PCI-E slots. My primary video card is in the top slot (slot 1 closest to the CPU).

So I have 3 other PCI-E slots and I don't know which one to put the 2nd gtx 580 in.

Does it matter? I want to put it in the #5 slot:

1 – PCI-E 2.0 x16 - Slot 1 (Primary)
2 – PCI-E x1 - Slot 1
3 – PCI-E 2.0 x8 - Slot 2
4 – PCI - Slot 1
5 – PCI-E 2.0 x4 - Slot 3
6 – PCI-E 2.0 x8 - Slot 4

The SLI bridge that came with my video card is a solid one (not ribbon type) so because of the length of it, the sli bridge is too long to reach from slot #1 to slot #3. So it seems like due to the length of it, I would need to use slot #1 + slot #5 to fit. However I noticed that slot is 2.0 x 4 (slower than x8)

So is it okay to put the 2nd gtx 580 in slot 3?

I looked at the manual for the motherboard on evga's site but it doesn't say anything about this so I don't know.

Put it in the slot with the most bandwidth, that's all that matters.

You can buy a ribbon type SLI bridge for a couple bucks anywhere online if you can wait for it to ship to put the card in

Your local Bestbuy should carry these SLI Bridges_ I know mine does, the flexible ones to be exact_ Odd that they carry SLi Bridges but not Crossfire bridges =[

Are you daft? The difference between a card in a PCIe 4x slot and 16x slot performance wise is %4-6... Place the card to optimize airflow!

Agreed. I think the card should be in 3 – PCI-E 2.0 x8 - Slot 2 and 6 – PCI-E 2.0 x8 - Slot 4.

Btw, you should reword your original posts...it is very confusing because of how you labeled the "slots".

4-6% figure was taken from a 5870. GTX580 is almost 2x larger. The bottleneck will be much higher.

Run a benchmark on both slots, and determine if the performance decrease is worth the temps.

I'd buy a flexi connector and use it in 6 – PCI-E 2.0 x8 - Slot 4

thanks for the replies guys. here's another thing i should add, i have a small case: antec 300 illusion. so if i put the video card in slot 6 then it would be practically right on top of the fan of my power supply. so wondeirng if i put it in slot 6 and put it right on top of the power supply and cover the fan if that would be bad b/c the video card is super hot and block the intake of the power supply and basically Choke it + Add alot of heat and maybe that would kill the power supply??

Why would you trade 6% of performance almost no real world difference in temps (assuming good air flow). Even a 4 card brick operates at good temperatures.

Ever see the 4-way air-cooled temp/noise SLi vids done with 470s and 480s? The 580 is still a pretty hot card on par with the 470 at least....
4 card brick? HOT!

5870 or 580; size makes no matter; it is bandwidth-the %4-6 number is relevant to most any modern video card. (Don't say not the 590/6990; they have internal PCIe bridges!)
