my view on the size of PC gaming v consoles

Well, to me, here is what i think the reason that developers don't get that much revenue from making a game on the PC rather than on the console. It's not pirating that makes developers such as crytek betray us and go to the consoles. the size of PC gaming is infinite and diverse, which is why they don't get much revenue from us compared to consoles which is limited. Let me explain.


Console gaming is like the earth, sure it is large, and always has new things to discover, but it is limited. consoles are much more centralized, pretty much the same as all other consoles and it seems console gamers have a limited choice on what they can buy. Which is why EA gets more revenue from consoles and prefers companies to make games for consoles too.


The size of PC gaming on the other hand is infinite. Kinda like the whole universe. There's so many more games on the pc compared to the console that its amazing. I'm not just talking about games you see everyone else playing from major developers (cod, crysis, etc), but the amount of facebook, flash, free mods, free games, rts, rpg, subscription based and indie games is insanely large. People on the PC can choose to spend their cash on these types of games rather than what EA publishes, which is another reason crysis 2 was made for console. So, pirating is a problem yes, but it is nothing compared to the amount of money people spend on pc gaming (look at how many people buy farmville stuff, minecraft, steam games, etc.)


So when you hear piracy is killing pc gaming, no its not. That doesn't mean you should do it, I'm always for supporting the developer. but the flow of cash goes out to many different places rather than to major developers like with consoles.


So don't feel worried about the future of pc gaming. It always has been and always will be here.

Well, have you not been paying attention to how many people are angry at them for bringing crysis 2 to consoles? And by "US" I mean pc gamers, I can see you are upset at me saying that so you must be a console gamer. either that or you are glad crysis 2 is on the consoles.

There is piracy for consoles as well.

For 360, you have to flash the firmware of the DVD drive.
For PS3, it used to be just a USB mod.
For Wii, you put some files on an SD card and flash the firmware.

Piracy exists for EVERYTHING. It's not just something that the PC division deals with.

If that's not an epic comparison, I don't know what is. Comparing the Earth to the entire universe. Does that mean all PC gamers can survive in the vacuum of space?

I think they both have their places, I just prefer the functionality of PC's in general, and controllers make me feel all weird inside.

Actually I play Crysis 2 on my laptop. I also have Crysis 1 and Warhead. I am neither glad nor upset Crysis 2 is on consoles as I don't own one. I suppose its good for the company as they pull in more revenue, and will increase the chance of sequels.

I just made my comment so that you understand your views do not represent the majority of PC gamers. I am a PC gamer and enjoy Crysis 2. And I don't think Crytek betrayed anybody. The only people upset are the elitists with £2,500 rigs whining "where is DX11"? If you exclude those babies many people are quite happy with the game. It is not the best game ever and it doesn't do anything new, but its still fun.

well, I didn't know what else to compare you can easily find out how many xbox games have been released which is ~800, but how many pc games are there? it's impossible to know.

I think for the most part it's easier to develop for consoles because there isn't the near infinite rig configs you have to optimize whatever game you're making. The consoles have the same hardware all across the platform.

Another reason is that there are a lot more kids on the console platforms and it's a whole lot easier to market towards them as we all know how advertising can sway them towards buying whatever product you're selling.

In my opinion PC gamers are a little smarter in their gaming purchases. Not as many of us jump on the marketing BS and spin bandwagon, we like to know what we're buying into. Not to mention the increasing business model many IP's are following with releasing titles on an annual basis (Eg:COD). Which brings us to mod tools.

Mod tools for PC make a game last for so much longer than its shelf life that more often times than not PC gamers will continue to play that game unless the next title in the series has something worth while to offer. But with the increasing amount of money games have shown the rake in, mod tools don't fit in with the business model publishers seem to be increasingly implementing that I mentioned just before.

It's possible all the F2P games have an effect. Many of the main Publishers/Developers are exploring the F2P model. I think it's more to do with the maximizing of profits and the general following where the money is to be milked from.

That's my view on it all anyway.
