New Build, New to OC...help me, help me please!

Thread Starter
Hello everyone.

So i just got done putting my new rig together...i think its beast....well, enough for what i want to do with it (gaming and design work)

my specs are:

motherboard: Asus Crosshair IV Formula :
cpu: AMD PHENOM II black edition quad @ 3.4 ghz ....OVERCLOCKED to 4.0
cpu cooling: Corsair H50 cpu cooler. (i added two fans to it)
psu: Corsair 750W
Memory : 16 gigs (board max) of Kingston HyperX 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Dual-Channel

Storage: OCZ 90g ssd (boot drive/game drive) ...the rest all seagates, 600g hdd / 500g/ 250g @ 7200 rpm and an external wd 1.5tb hdd

GPU: EVGA GTX 470 with 1.5 ddr5 video ram.
case: cooler master HAF 932 case

as far as airflow, the pc has 3 additional fans aside from the h50.
its got 2 HUGE fans 12mms'...one on the side and one on top, and a ..i forgets the size but one a WEE bit smaller in front where the HDDs are.

So...my friend says to me "common man with all that you HAVE to OC "
and admittedly, ive always wanted to....and i HAVE done SOME searching to see where i can start but there is SO much info that....i was like forget this lol...until now.

anyways so, My mobo has an OC software that Ocs my memory and cpu...it does like these self run tests and keeps going bit by bit until it thinks its enough?

so after running that, it went from 3.4 to 4.0.

then i ran FINAL FANTASY 14 game and after like an hr or so, i got BSOD.
i got scared since i know nothing of temps etc...and lowered it back to stock 3.4

after looking on here and the net, i downloaded CORE TEMP prog to read my cpu temps.

i dont know 100% how to read em but. from looking on it.

it reads a stable 4.2c on idle and while working on things like photoshop etc...
but when i game it goes lil bit by bit to like ....last i saw was 6.2c to 6.5

now i dont know if this is good or not, or...i dont even know what my cpus normal temp is supposed to be so i dont know.........i dont know anything.

i did ttry to google my cpus normal temp but thats ......i dont think thats the right way to search for my information since everyones ambient temp is diff...

so i came here to the pros.

any help in the form of SCHOOLIN A NOOB i can get is GREATLY appreciated lol.

thanks in advanced.

What voltage are you running at? and I would check out the AMD CPU section of the site, lots of helpful info there. I would learn how to navigate your bios and get the feel for overclocking in there. But back to the BSOD, Up the voltage on your CPU by small amounts then stress testing with prime95 for a couple hours. It's boring and tedious, but it's worth it in the end.

OK mate here you go. This should take you about 5mins to achieve.

1. you need to get into your bios and head towards 'AI tweaker'
2. AI Overclock tuner - Set to manual
3. set you CPU multiplier to 14.
4. AMD turbo core - set to disabled. you want all cores at the same speed
5. CPU Bus frequency - set to 286. multiplied by 14 will give you 4ghz.
6. PCI-E frequency - set to 100
7. Set your DRAM frequency to 1525. you have 1600 but you only want to overclock your cpu for the time being.
8. set your CPU voltage to 1.45v
9. DRAM voltage to 1.65v

your done. Enjoy mate.

I'd suggest reading this thread http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...ing-guide.html
It will give lots of good info on the "How To'" OC and a real good path to follow.

With a CHIV mobo use PC Probe II which you can get at the Asus site for monitoring all temps and voltages it's the preferred tool for monitoring.

You need to watch the CPU Socket temps (forget about the core temp) and stay under 55c for stability. Max Vcore of 1.5v for 24/7 and can go as high as 1.55v. Be sure to check temps and voltages under load while running stress test.

For stress testing run Prime95, and you should pass 12-24 hrs to be considered stable. I'd strongly advise reading/studying the above thread and revert back to it often. OC one area at a time and keep notes of settings and temps.

If you need more help you should check out the Asus Crosshair IV Formula/Extreme Club thread in my sig where you can find lots of useful info plus a good group of very knowledgeable people to help you.

You should also update your sig to current components to make it easier for those helping you.

Dont know if i really agree with crazy. I pretty much have the same setup i just upped the multiplier to 20...which will give you a 4ghz OC. Set your ram at 1600...pretty sure its set on stock of 1333...if you have to at all up the voltage a little. Run prime95 for a few on blend setting...you can also up ht link speed to about 2000 anything over that will hurt performance on most machines..not everyone.
