edit: when i open autoexec.bat with notepad, it is empty, literally

I applaud.gif you for running the scans in safe mode. That puts you ahead of about 90% of the people I know. thumb.gif

The autoexec.bat being blank is a good thing, but it does make this even more complicated. Hmm... I need to think on this one for a bit.

While I'm pondering, what programs currently start with windows?

EDIT -

Don't feel bad, I have moments like that on average of once a day. Happens to all of us!

Only AVG, ATI CC, and Skype on start-up, nothing else

Disable all 3 of those in Msconfig and restart. Does it still happen?

This is an obvious one, but I have to throw it out there. Have you checked your boot order in your bios, to make sure your windows drive is in the #1 slot?

It is probably from a virus having set a command into cmd.exe on startup. Most likely being loaded the same time as your userinit process since you cannot find it anywhere else.

Trying to find the location in the registry via searches. I am on W7 now and no longer have an XP box to verify.

It is a common location for antivirus 2011(and all other variants) load from or replace the userinit.

Found the location I believe.

Please open a regedit by typing "regedit" into your run box.

Navigate to:
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows NT\CurrentVersion\winlogon
There is a key called "Userinit".. please post back everything in that key. Should only be the userinit however.

Example: C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

Also please report everything under the "Shell" key as well. Should just be explorer.exe. I believe.

EDIT - I will have an answer tomorrow as I cannot find it at the moment. I will talk with an old co-worker that originally found it for me.

The possibility that I have a virus is slim to none based on the fact that I reformatted very recently and I haven't downloaded anything fishy yet.
