I can press more keys at once using the included USB->PS/2 adapter, but it's not unlimited.
Try holding down W and R, then try pressing V and see if it registers. Then try Z+X+up arrow+down arrow.

Since I have a slightly malfunctioning U9BL, I'm going to RMA it... think they would consider trading it for a U9BL-S or even just a U9 (don't care much for the backlight)? It wouldn't really make a difference in their finances, I'm thinking, but who knows

Same test on the U9BL-S all combination working, although limited to 6KRO if connected via USB.

Seem strange they use a different design for the two keyboards

I did that NKRO test using the included USB->PS/2 adapter. I'll try again using just USB.

NKRO requires a dual layer PCB (for them at least) and a set of signaling diodes. Adds about $2-$3 per board, which can add up quick.

I'm disappointed they cut NKRO, but not terribly surprised.

I'm assuming this is just the U9BL-S without the backlighting?

EDIT: I should say, are there any differences besides the lack of backlighting?

No NKRO, no USB/Audio ports.

Looks like:

U9 = MX browns, no NKRO, no ports, wrist rest
U9PLUS = MX browns, NKRO, ports, wrist rest
U9BL = MX blues, NKRO, ports, wrist rest, extra keys, backlighting
U9BL-S = MX browns, NKRO, ports, wrist rest, extra keys, backlighting
