GeForce 560 ti memory OC; bad idea?

Thread Starter
I have an MSI Twin Frozr.

Is it a bad idea to OC my memory? It seems like everyone keep saying the 560 doesn't have memory heatsinks.

My core won't go higher than 950mhz but I can push my memory from 2100Mhz to 2300Mhz just fine while keeping the core @ 950. Is it a bad idea?

The card indeed doesn't have direct cooling on anything but the GPU.

So OCing the memory depends on how good is the cooling on the card you have, and how cool already are the memory chips.

A moderate memory OC, like 2200, should be fine. As long as you don't push it without checking temps first, you should be ok.

Find max oc on the core with mem at stock and then start raising it.

I have the same video card oc'd to 975 and my memory clock to 2160 works smoothly on my rig, and i have no problem with overheating as my card always keeps cool... I might oc my memory clock a bit more and see whats the max i can take it up to. Mind you some people have the same card oc'd to 1ghz which takes time to get there you have to do a bit of trial and error to slowly reach to 1 ghz.

Hey Aknolidge, did you end up pushing your mem more? I'm interested in your results. I want to push my mem a bit as well, but I'm worried bout the cooling.

Since you can't direct check video ram temperature, do you just go by the core, and by kombustor/crysis glitches to find max?

Upping just the memory will not provide nearly the performance as the core, however, the more you OC the core, the more performance 'overhead' you will have theoretically.

Does anyone know if the Gigabyte Windforce 2X version of the GTX560Ti has RAM heatsinks?

How do you guys feel about overclocking shaders separately?

Also, when overclocking memory, should I just go by core temp. and graphics glitches? Are there any other temps that you you can monitor besides core temp?

You can't OC the shaders separately w/Fermi cards, as they're locked at 1:2 ratio with the core. With previous generations though, for sure you'd OC the shaders separately and get everything out of them you could.

I really wouldn't worry too much about the temps on the memory. Just run the mem clock up as high as you can w/o problems (freezing, artifacts, etc) and you should be fine. IOW if the chips are getting too hot, you'll see the problems. If they run okay, then they're not too hot. IMHO, anyways.

As mentioned though max out the core OC first, and then add whatever mem OC on top of that you can get away with. The core OC is far more important, and sometimes a memory OC can compromise how high you can get the core to go stable.
