AMD Athlon64 3000+ 1.8GHz venice 90nm overclock can't pass 210Mhz

Thread Starter
to all master of OC, i need some help here.
here's my specs
AMD Athlon64 3000+ 1.8Ghz venice 90nm
GA-K8NF-9 (rev1.x) with F7 BIOS
Visipro(generic i think) PC3200 1x1024 + 2x512
X-TREME 600W PSU, i got from my friend, i think it isn't good PSU
HDD SEAGATE 80GB and 500GB
WIN XP SP2

i try to OC my rig right now,but i have a problem
when i tried to raise CPU frequency above 210Mz(211), it wont POST, but when i set to 210MHz it can load windows.
what i want is my rig can be OC to 2.1Ghz, pls if someone can help, i appreciate that..

note: i already read all about guide or some information and still got nothing..
here's my setting for 210 Mhz:
CPU frequency 210 Mhz
K8 Clock Ratio x9 1800 Mhz
HT Frequency x5
Memory Index Value 200

and when i tried to move on 211Mhz, i've done this :
- lower my HT frequency x3
- add Vcore 1.500 (normal 1.400)
- add VDIMM +0.1V
- change memory index value to 166
- K8 Clock Ratio x8.5 and x8
but still it wont POST.

did my generic DIMM or PSU caused this problem?

The 210 limit is usually of the motherboards that didn't have AGP/PCI lock. NF4 chipset has it implemented, but maybe the lock isn't activated in the BIOS. Search for this setting, or simply for settings that allow fixing the PCI frequency to 33MHz or PCIe frequency to 100 (in stead of "auto"). Good luck

yes, this motherboard doesn't have AGP/PCI lock, but it has PCIe freq like you said, and i've change that value to 100, but still can't pass 210

any other solution?

and last time i try, i can't boot to OS, with 210 Mhz and when i look back to BIOS, i set memory index value to 166, but it can boot when i set memory index value back again to 200

here my screenshot of cpuz and gpu

..so from my experience with NF4:
*the HT frequency multi it likes the most is 4x, I see you're still on 5x
*is it stable (like half an hour of OCCT test stable) @210? If yes, then 211 could be unstable, but not that unstable as not to boot if you don't change any other setting.
*NF4 is pretty sensitive to motherboard cooling, though this is visible from 240 up
*use 200 for the memory as much as possible; rise DDR voltage by max 0.2V if you have to, or loosen timings to 3-3-3-9 before decreasing to 166. For some reason it works better this way.

All of this though may be in vain if you can't fix PCIe speed. For some (not me) OCing improved when changing PCIe speed to 106 or 104. Not more than 108 though as all the rig can become unstable. Also use a soft (like aida64) that can report you the PCIe speed to see if it really has the value you're setting. I'd suggest to mess with this parameter as a last resort.

cheers

yup, i still set multiplier to 5, but i know i have to set x4 if this cpu frequency can rise.
right now, prime95 still running for about 3 hours and there's no problem yet..
here's what i get from aida64 in the southbridge section :
Clock Generator:
CPU FSB 210.6 MHz
HyperTransport 1053.0 MHz
PCI 33.3 MHz
PCI Express 103.1 MHz
MAC PHY 125.0 MHz
SATA PHY 99.8 MHz
Audio/Modem Codec 24.6 MHz
USB2 Controller 48.0 MHz
PIT / ACPI Timer 14.3 MHz

do i need to put all reports from aida64?

this is the reports of OCCT, i dont know is it stable or not..
thx dragons

Lower your HT multiplier to 4x or 3x and try increasing bus speed again.

If it still wont post beyond 210, it could be the ram that cannot handle the overclock.

I assume your ram is currently set at ddr400, lower it to ddr333 and increase bus speed again.

I tried what u said, but still won't POST. Do I need certain ram that can be overcloak or its ok if I use generic/non-OC ram?
If it have to use certain ram then problem solved, I have to satisfy with 210 MHz.
Anyway thanks for your response

i will post my step-by-step to OC, so it can be analize easily
1. i change K8 CPU Frequency from 200 to 205, boot, and fine
2. i raised it to 210, boot, and still fine
FYI, in 2 steps above i didn't change anything except K8 CPU Frequency
3. i raised again to 215, boot, and failed. it reboot again after display the processor page with the memory amount and then say warning cpu overclock etc.. etc...
from this step it always failed to boot into windows, exactly like #3
4. i reduced to 211
5. i move on to K8 CPU multipier, i reduced it to x8.5 (default is x9)
6. i changed HT Link Frequency from auto to 4
7. set Memory Index Value to 166 until 100
8. added CPU Vcore 1.425 until 1.7 (normal value 1.4)
9. added vHT link 0.1V
10. added VPCIe 0.1, i never change the value of PCIe Frequency, it still on 100Mhz
11. added VDIMM 0.1-0.2 (the option is only that)
12. mixup step 5 to 11

some anomali :
- i turn back K8 CPU Frequency to 210, it also failed, after some experiment, the problem is i put Vcore 1.4, when i change to normal option, it can boot into windows
- with CPU freq at 210, i changed memory timing from 3-3-3-8 to 3-3-3-9, it failed.
maybe my memory can handle OC thing

from what i've done above, can someone give me any conclusion why i can't OC above 210Mhz?

anyway thank you for your response, and sorry about my bad english

Have you read the AM2 OC Guide yet? The author explains how you can isolate each component and see where it's limit is at.

I think he also said that half multipliers shouldn't be used.

Anyways, see if that gets you anywhere smile.gif Maybe knowing the max values for each frequency will get you further.

yes i've had, but like i said before, i already mixed all steps, so basically, i've done this : (i use AM2 OC Guide term)
Reference Clock: 211
CPU Multiplier: 6x
HT Multiplier: 2x
CPU Voltage: 1.4v (default)
Memory Setting: DDR100
Memory Timings: 2-2-2-6 (Auto)
Memory Voltage: Normal (the option is normal, +0.1, +0.2)
Motherboard Voltage: Normal (the option is normal, +0.1, +0.2)

it stop after display processor page and memory ammount and then rebbot again, i can't get into windows..
