[KT] Why Don't I Lose Myself in Games Anymore - Page 4

I think the fact we are having a hard time getting lost in games these days is simply because when we where younger the games where newer. Think about it. 3d immersion gaming got a strong start, and we ohed and awed at the new 3d game play then the totally explorable open worlds like in FFVII. Morrowind was just another graphical improvement on an already used Idea and most everything else are just a few new game modes and better graphics. Its essentially like getting better vision through the years, but really a 3d game is just that. Modern Games, or even games of the last 8 years really have not brought anything as groundbreaking as 3d game play or open world game play, just different stories, and Scenery and the occasional new gadget like physics, tessellation, and what not which really is not ground breaking, it just changes the looks incrementally as hardware advances. Minecraft's graphics are lacking, but, the open world sand box was the next promising thing that kind of fizzled.

I think the next groundbreaking thing in video games will be open development platforms that make making a game kindergarten easy so one can write there own story, create there own play modes and enjoy with friends, That is the next level of immersion. Really, who wants to do another 500 quest open end game to be rewarded with another 13min. scrolling credit show.

MMOFPS offer something unique with intricate rewards and ranking systems, but once you have played one.... They are all very similar.

The only thing that is going to change the current state of games is a drying up or a buyers refusal to buy a reworked version 2 of the same game. It really is the only way we can push for the next level. And no, I dont think 3d glasses are the next level as most people get nausea and head aches because the DOF falsely changes causing your eyes to cross and focus on things at a very high frequency. In the long run it will be proven as hazardous as smoking.

Metro 2033 is full of immersion. It's also a beautiful game. However the graphics are only one small part of it. The characters, the music, the story. All of these things mesh together to create a cohesive living world.

Games that fail to suck you in are games that fail to make a believable living world. It's no wonder you're not getting sucked into the latest Call of Duty game. It has the emotional depth of a pothole.

Don't be blamin' graphics when story and "soul" are the problem.

While some of the decisions with respect to depth and coherent vision are certainly pretty crummy, it's a mistake to dismiss graphical presentation, which can be a part of the problem.

Though in any event, it probably would be more interesting to turn the thread upside down and start coming up with recent games which have presented that sense of immersion to players.

actually, realism does mak it immersive. obviously she hasnt played real games....DoD had some very immersive feel because it reinacted real events... CoH, etc. frankly, no, css, tf2, mw2 are not based on realism....\\

...frankly, cod 1 and 2 fixated a lot on realistic battlefields..... this was over 6 years ago.... whats with people these days thinking they know gaming?

Mostly right. Pretty much everything that contributes to creating a real living, believable world that you feel like you can be a part of as a gamer, is what makes games pull you in.

I didn't really get pulled into Metro though..it has lots of good things, but it has way too many parts where you just sit back and watch the game play itself. That isn't pulling you in. =\\ It's the same for Uncharted 2 and MGS4, and other games of the like.

Games makers have all been about the pretty pictures for the last few years, and even more so of late. Actual gameplay has taken a second spot. There hasn't been anything since HL2 that's really grabbed me with replay value. I'm still playing HL1 on and off, just because it's so well made.
