Strong recommendation for the RODE.

This is the only choice that I know of:

If you want Sigma, it would be another 200$. If you want Canon, we're talking 1,400$.

definitely get the 70-200 2.8.

i actually would suggest AGAINST the 24-70/2.8 and instead the 16-35/2.8 (or 17-55). the 16-35 will allow you to get up close and personal which the 24-70 isnt wide enough.

plus u have an aps-c 24-70 is a weird range.

i have video down being that it is my specialty. my weakness is still lol. i think when i talk gear with him i will push for the 70-200 2.8 and if he just wont do it then i will settle for the f4 since the only sport that will be affected is mens soccer which occurs at night. the other sports are fine and occur in good day light conditions almost all the time. then after producing quality material for him i will get more glass.

as far as mics go yall i know the rode is good but because yall dont fully know what im doing video wise ill let you know that i have no use for a rail mounted mini shotty mic. im shooting talking heads which require a lavaliere

thanks for the lens advice. i got my fingers crossed on a 2.8, i already know that my next purchase is a 135L which i currently have $350 saved for on top of whatever my family has set aside to help me with. then after that grabbing a 50 1.4 of course

thanks for looking out. i think if i decide to go with a zoom in the wider ranges i definitely will go with the 16-35 or equivalent only because of my camera being a crop i have the mid range covered by a 50 pretty much.

and speaking of. is there an equivalent piece of glass to the 16-35L or would that be the best choice. i am interested in the 24L but that one is out of my price range as of right now

EDIT:

so i dont normally listen to the people of potn but i was suggested to look at the sigma 70-200 2.8 since it is the same price as the canon f4. is this worth looking into. i know nothing about sigma but for the price a 2.8 would be a life saver especially at the focal range that i want. also out of curiousity would a teleconverter work on this like the canon 1.4X

Don't get a Tamron 70-200. AF is stupid slow. And buy things used.
7D has no magic lantern, makes me sad.
post #20 of 22
My input from doing an identical job for my school;

I used a 50 1.4 to shoot basketball/futsal, and I wish I had access to something like a 85mm 1.8 instead. I found the slow AF of the 50mm 1,4 AF-S was adequate, but I was doing a fair bit of cropping.

Will you be taking photos of any concerts or anything similar? If so, IS would be useful but if not, you could get away with the 2.8L. Perhaps IS can help you take more stable videos if you are doing interviews on the run or something similar. I also suggest you get a 2X TC if you don't get a spot on the boundary. But as the 7D has lots of megapixels, you could get away with 200mm perhaps.

Also, get a second body so you can still take group photos with a midrange zoom. You don't know how stupid it feels when you have a 70-200 and a group poses in front of you and you have to grab another tog to take the shot.
