You may have to edit xorg.conf
Code:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

you can manually specifiy resolution in there.

did you have updates downloading while you where doing this or did you have synaptic open as this can cause the error you`ve posted also the best way is usually to manually install nvidia drivers from their website i`ve never gotten the default nouveau driver to work with the nvidia drivers installed, and have had to blacklist the nouveau driver before installing the nvidia driver then use sudo update-grub2 restart pc this will take you to a login term on boot up after restart so have the .run file that you`ve downloaded marked as executable

So how do I make the .run file an executable? Sorry for all the confusion, I've never used Ubuntu in my life.

right click on it, properties, permissions, check "allow executing file as program"

Ok i did that for the nvidia driver i dl'ed. I clicked and it said blah blah executables may contain viruses so I hit ok and and still asked me what program to open it with.
not sure, never done it that way. i usually just do it via the additional drivers, and its always worked for me...so youre gonna have to ask the guy who made that suggestion how to do it.
