Thread title: Nvidia, Asus put the clamps on GTX 590 voltage.

590 direct competition is AMD 6990.

Some people are trying to choose between those 2 cards for the same price. There is alot of ''590 or 6990?'' threads all over the internet... If it's not pertinent to you, it is for others.

No ''clamps'' on AMD voltage, no throttling, no OCP, and you can OC a 6990 just like 2 separated 6970. But you can't OC a 590 like 2 separated 580.

So it's totally pertinent here to talk about what the 590 direct competition can do.
What was the max overclock on air?

Most reviews have the 6990 with less than 1000Mhz

I heard that with enough voltage and the fan at 100% 1000Mhz is possible. That's a 20% overclock

The 6990 is known for being the loudest video card of them all; so no many could actually deal with the fan at 100% though

20% overclock is also possible for the GTX 590. That would be 723Mhz

HOCP had their card at 723Mhz and 2 users in the GTX 590 owners club have posted benchmarks at 723Mhz too. BTW the voltage can still be adjusted by modifying the BIOS. So far 0.963 seems to be safe and enough for 723Mhz

I would take the 6990 over a 590 any day. Whether it be loud or not.
The 6990 operates safely without burning. A stock 590 can burn. I will not spend $700 on a card to run it at stock speeds.

The 6990 does not need 100% fanspeed for 1000Mhz. Stop exagerating.

The thing that bothers me most is the 590 can hardly run at 580 clocks speeds. Which is a total joke.

Overclock for me is the 6990 going over 6970 stock speeds, and the gtx 590 going over the 580 stock speeds. Which the gtx 590 can hardly do.

What is the max 590 OC on water? Oups. No need to answer that one, since it's exactly the same OC you get on air, since the drivers are hard-locking the voltage.

See my post above. I was not bashing your card.
I am just curious. if its does 900Mhz + on air, its a win.

How could it be any different since there was not a single waterblock on the market when they did their reviews? All the 6990 on water are already over 1000.

You are exagerating.

And who cares about the ''noise'', really? I was talking about the 6990 on WATER, since it's an enthusiast card. Why don't you talk about what the 590 can do on water versus air? Nothing. No difference. Same OC on water or on air for the 590.

Go read the 6990 thread. Almost all the owners are on water or thinking of going that way. Enthusiast card. 590 on water? It's like throwing money trough the window. Doesn't make any difference.

Sigh. Others told you that before. So I will repeat it again. The 590 is 2 highly downclocked 580, so 20% is NOT impressive when you are starting so low.

The 6990 is ALREADY at the 6970 level from the start! Not highly downclocked 6970... So IT IS impressive to get 30% over the stock 6970 clocks with a 6990..

I know you will argue endlessly, but intelligent enthusiasts will understand the difference.

Sorry, with Saulin typing faster then Lucky Luke can fire, I was confused. Sorry.

On air, I was doing 950-975/1350 with the AUSUM BIOS voltage.

And 1050/1350 is just a start. I'm just starting OCing my 6990 on water since I got my waterblock only yesterday. I just put the voltage to 1.25v, then 1050/1350 randomly, and it's rock-stable.

Will try pushing it harder after work.

Not allowing two cherry picked GPUs to reach 580 speeds is a travesty. But there was no way Nvidia was going to allow a $700 card to steal sales from $1000 580 SLI. AMD isn't worried about that, their 6990 is priced in the ballpark of two 6970s. Hell, they even give you a switch to clock them like 6970s.

I am not defending saulin by any means (he's an obvious fanboy), but a 580 also costs $500 retail whereas a 6970 costs $350.

If I were expecting 2xGTX580 performance levels from my 590, i'd have gone out and spent $300 more and achieved that performance.

The 590 can overvolt on air safely to 0.963-1.02 mV, which is good enough for about 750+mhz.

At the moment, the newest drivers are clamping down on voltage tweaking to prevent the early disasters where reviewers were pushing the card to 1.20mV while the drivers didn't have any sort of OCP control on the cards.

The result? Blown VRMs.

That's not an issue anymore. And again, quit pressing this whole "elitist enthusiast" view which you peddle in every 590 thread; not EVERYONE buys a card strictly due to overclocking potential.

If I purchase a 590 to replace my 480s in SLI that I had because I wanted less heat, power consumption and noise but wanted performance *close* to 580s in SLI while paying $300 less, and I only have a single monitor setup currently....all of a sudden my purchasing decision makes sense.

Believe me, i am not phased in the least bit that I can't hit 900mhz on air on my card cause honestly, I don't need it. You seem to think that anyone who doesn't see things the way you do when it comes to being an "enthusiast" either doesn't know what they're doing with their money, or are making bad decisions.

The authority with which you spew out that line of thinking on these forums is one of the most comical i've ever seen.

I guess that going against the grain and buying/building/overclocking based on MY NEEDS and not what other people deem as "ZOMGAMAZING LET ME STROKE YOUR EPEEN" just doesn't qualify me as being an "intelligent enthusiast." I forgot that what you say/your opinion is equivalent to gospel on these forums.
