Raven RV02-E question

Thread Starter
I'm looking at buying Asus' p67 Sabertooth motherboard to replace my re-called UD4. Anyways, the Sabertooth recommends a top down cooler. With my case being rotated 90 degrees, and having air come from the bottom to the top, would that be counter productive?

I'm guessing no one knows? Does it even really matter?

It would probably be counter productive against it, anyway, just get a regular cooler, imo, I think they are just saying top down because they are more effective in some cases, or test benches.

I have very good results in my case on a p8p67 pro

I understand the case is a very good air cooling case. My issue relies more on the cooling performance for my motherboard. With Asus' claim that the Sabertooth performs best with a top down cooler, I want to try and max that performance out. But, will I be getting the best performance out of that cooler with the Raven's 90 degree rotation of the motherboard?

I'm guessing it isn't that big of an issue, but I just wanted to see other opinions. Plus, I plan on getting the Noctua NH-C14, which is a top cooler regardless of the style.

I would guess they recommend a top-down cooler so the VRMs get some lovin'. That wouldn't change if the mobo is rotated, since the cooler is pushing air towards the mobo regardless.

I found one review that does claim slightly better performance with the top-down cooler. http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages..._review,6.html.

Wouldn't a vertical cooler see better performance in a case like the Raven, though? Since it's pushing air right through the fans + heatsink?

Either way you should get good performance, but the need for a top down cooler shouldn't be as great with this case as it would be with others. The penetrators do a good job of keeping everything cooled on the mobo

You could just remove all the "armor" on the motherboard. The "armor" is designed to channel all that air from a top down cooler over the rest of the motherboard.

The inside of the RV02-e is essentially a wind tunnel. I own a FT02 and it's identical to the RV02-e inside. I am willing to bet good money that the motherboard will get better airflow with the armor off and a tower cooler inside a RV02 than it would with a top down cooler and the armor on in a traditional case.

Asus isn't expecting you to have 3 X 180mm fans blowing directly over the motherboard. You would have to be crazy to think that a single 80mm or 120mm fan flowing down could provide more cooling than 3 X 180mm fans.

I would remove the armor and get a NH-D14 instead. Why sacrifice CPU temps in order to gain minimal motherboard cooling potential? Motherboard temps aren't even critical anyways.

I think that "armor" is just a gimmick. Anybody overclocking enough to heat up the motherboard will not be using a top down cooler. Anybody using a stock top down style cooler will not be getting the motherboard hot. It's a silly idea.

I have seen multiple sources claim that the armor is removable. Just take it off and utilize the massive airflow of the case itself.
