Linksys E2000 Transfer Rates

Thread Starter
the E2000 is rated to transfer at gigabit speeds. both of the NICS on my pcs are rated for gigabit as well. when i transfer files via FTP from pc to pc they only transfer at 10MB/s instead of approx 100MB/s like it should be getting. any ideas why the speeds are so slow?

Have both NICs auto-negotiated to 1000Mb/s?
What drives are the data going from and to?
How is performance using a different protocol?

Yes... are the NICs at 1000Mbps? Check their properties. Having 1Gb/s NICs and switch does not always mean they actually are at 1Gbps. (i.e. bad wiring)

Know about the storage devices absolutely makes sense. If the data you are transferring from is on a USB thumb drive, then the network transfer rate would be bottlenecked by the thumb drive. In addition, the type of files have an effect of throughput. It is faster to transfer a single large file than lots of smaller ones.
Once again...

Sounds more like one of your links is negotiated to 100 mbps (~12.5 MB/sec theoretical maximum). Even if you were transferring to USB drives on either end those have more than double the throughput.

FTP should theoretically be faster than Samba due to less overhead, but feel free to give it a shot regardless.

Also keep in mind if you're trying to transfer a bunch of small files your transfer speed will be a lot lower.
