MSI is happy to announce that the MSI R6870 Hawk is now world’s fastest HD 6870 on the market. In the hands of world-class overclocker David "THC" Trandberg his R6870 Hawk conquered the top spots in 3DMark Vantage, 3DMark06 and 3DMark05 making MSI the top brand in six out of seven official benchmarks on overclocking website HWBOT.org.

(I should add that this PR was prepared last week. Records change weekly but the information was accurate at time of publication.)

Ooh Alex is back. The only thing I never understood was why MSI never overclock their cards a lot like Gigabyte and their SOC series. And do you guys cherry-pick GPUs too?
Offtopic: I've been looking for a 480 Lightning but can't find one here at all. :u
Edit: I can't find any Lightning product at major stores. MSI show no love for UK?

For 30$ more you can get a 6950 2gb reference and unlock it to a 6970.

You now have far better results.

http://www.hwbot.org/community/submi...70_26120_marks

1343/1317 clocks and the top scoring 6870.

That score from one GPU is much more impressive than the score in OP from two.

I don't know product availability in the UK... but with regards to why it's not as high, it's a very complicated answer.

Bottom line is, no point delivering a product that can't perform at the advertised spec.

There's no true "binning" process... it's just a matter of a GPU going to QA to see if it meets a certain rated spec. If not, it gets used for secondary product, if not, then reference design cards.

A lot of people say "reference cards overclock as good as those fancy ones". Perhaps this is true, but the chances of you getting a "dud" or "poor overclocker" are much higher with a reference card than one that is OC'd from the factory and/or is of a higher tier.

You also get a lot more power consumption, a much larger card, a crappy blower, and a bunch of other goodies.

If you (consumer) is considering a HD6950 versus a 6870, you're not really someone that would be in the market for this card.

Alex, any more info on why you can't do a 6990/590 Lightning? You said something about manufacturers being limited by thermals?
Oh darn, so not many high-end non-ref MSI products in the UK then. All I see is the Twin Frozr GTX x60 and 6870/6950.
