I am selling my inlaws a computer tomorrow. Here is a list of parts that I have(all compatible with each other)

Mobo: Asus P5Q and Intel DG43GT
CPU's: Intel E7400 and Q6700
Ram: 2x2G OCZ Plat and 4x1G Who knows el`cheapo
Video Cards: ATi 4850, 4870, and the intel board has onboard video.

Ok.. all they will be doing really is Facebook, word proccessing and email on this computer.. they are old, so now gaming in the future for them.

Which set of hardware should I give them?

+rep to anyone who explains why I should keep one cpu over the other one.

I would go for a E7400. Doubt they need a C2Q if that's all they will be doing.
I say:

Intel MoBo
Intel E7400
4X1GB RAM
& 4850 in case they want to run HD movies etc.

Would the C2Q be better for gaming than the E7400? Also 65nm vs 45nm

This set of hardware would be enough for them if that's the only thing they're doing. And even if they ever do something more intensive, that E7400 can generously be OC'd even with stock cooler and do the job for them. I also picked the HD4850, just at least if they ever decided to watch HD stuff or a bit of editing from their PC, it would still run smooth.

Also, keep the Q6700 as it would be more future-proof. Some of the new games now utilizes those 4 cores. And with the P5Q it would OC like a boss.

PS Code Geass, the computer that Im putting together for her is damn near on spec with what you have. Q6700, P5Q SE2, 4G OCZ, 4870 512MB, 320G WD Blue, 600W Thermalgay PSU..

Thats funny, how well do newer games play with that video card? I just bought it off the market on OCN.. curious!
