Worth upgrading from 555BE to 1055T?

Thread Starter
Hi, I currently have the AMD Phenom X2 555 Black Edition overclocked to 3.70 ghz at 2 cores. I was wondering if it is worth upgrading to a AMD Phenom X6 1055T. My main use for my computer is general web browsing and gaming (mainly Starcraft 2). Here are my specs..

AMD Phenom X2 555 @ 3.70 ghz (2 cores)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Heatsink
Biostar TA870+ Motherboard
8GB Corsair XMS DDR3
Nvidia 9800GTX+ Video
630w Antec Neo PSU

I can get my hands on the 1055T for $130 brand new. Just wondering if it's worth upgrading my CPU right now or if I should wait? Thanks in advance!

How come? What if the 2 processors were both clocked at 3.70ghz?

No game uses six cores, if anything, get a quad, or attempt to unlock the other two cores if you haven't already.

what he said. You already have a really great gaming processor at that speed, and you won't see a huge improvement with the 6 cores. It would be better to upgrade your graphics card

in SC2 you will notice a good performance bump due to better cpu. but check your mobo if it supports 125w cpus otherwise it might explode in the long run smile.gif

Note: multitasking will be much faster on the 1055t too wink.gif

Be sure you have MOSFET heatsinks installed or the revision that came with those MOSFET heatsinks. An x6 at 125W TDP would be significantly more VRM heavy. Very heavy OC-ing even with MOSFET heatsinks (i.e. passing 1.5V) not recommended.

Have you tried unlocking additional cores?

Yea, I've tried unlocking the 3rd and/or 4th cores, but have been unsuccessful. The computer fails to post if I attempt to unlock additional cores so I just kept it at 2 cores.

I would see no merit in going for a 6 core right now...simply cause the new 8core bulldozer will be coming in june, wait a while and see how it does then make a decision. The 555 is a good chip of all you need it for like me is for gaming.
