can't get any sound - Page 3

Looks from your config that you have the previous version of OSS compiled into the kernel instead of as modules, or disabled entirely.

but since you don't have a /proc/asound i would imagine it is due to the fact you don't have a sound driver loaded.

i've got a question, when you first install, does your sound card work with alsa/pulse? (before installing/compiling OSSv4?)

what files do you have in /etc/modprobe.d/ ?

i know in ubuntu oss drivers are blacklisted, and you have to unblacklist them.
yes alsa/pulse dose work
but I like oss cuz it sounds better and old linux games and windows games like it better

Code:
tux@sabayon /etc/modprobe.d $ dir
aliases.conf blacklist.conf lirc.confppp.conf
alsa.conf i386.conf pnp-aliases.confusb-load-ehci-first.conf
alsa.conf
will look at it

it the Alsa kernel modules' configuration file.
removing to see what happens

removed it
then rebooted
nope on sound still
worth a try tho

sorry for not being able to help

i simply just don't know enough about OSSv4 and gentoo/sabayon...hopefully one day we can pin point the problem, so it doesn't happen in the near future so you can upgrade to new kernels

It's stuff like this that leads me to state that I'm only ever going to compile my own kernels in future - no more binary downloads for me!

if sabayon is anything like gentoo when it comes to being "flaky" i can imagine a whole gaggle of problems one can face with it

i threw sabayon on a spare harddrive last night, and was playing around with it, i just got one question for 3dfx, why this distro?

i had to restart the installation about 4 different times, cause it kept "crashing" on me or something would stop working and the next and back buttons would become unresponsive...i had to use the text install to get it to actual install.

after finally getting it successfully installed, its update manager polled the repositories, which took like 30 minutes, wasn't sure if it was the mirror i was connected too, my internet being whacked or the package manager is really just that slow...

after it found a few updates, i went to update, and it complained that 2 system updates had to be applied first before the updates, there was only two options "ignore" and "abort", so at first i chose ignore, and the update failed, and the next time i clicked on abort, and it asked me to agree to a license, so i did, but the whole system froze after that...

after the reboot i looked at the updates i was selecting, and in fact they were the 2 system updates that it was originally telling me i need to update first...so i tried again...same thing...

at this point, i gave up...i figure if an OS was going to give me such a headache, i would rather get the headache form a full on gentoo install

but to each his own.

That will get rid of ALSA and allow OSS to load it's modules. Either make /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf or edit one and have all that in it. Once you do that restart and you should be good to go.
