When Half-Life 2 and Doom 3... - Page 8

I had an athlon 2000xp, which was 1.6ghz, 512 ram and a gefore mx440 (I think that's what it was called). So I ran HL2 at lowered settings and doom3 was a slide show, had to wait till 2007 for when I finally got a decent pc again. I was 23 in 2004 lol.

i bought my first gaming PC to play HL2 after seeing some gameplay footage on an HD special, back in 2003... my jaw dropped, and i immediately knew that i had to get the 9800XT to play it @ 1024x768.

Far Cry ended up being released long before, so that very week i had a 3.4 P4 with 9800XT, and 1gb dual channel gaming rig made up, and i embarked on my first PC gaming experience. the high levels of Far Cry nostalgia still resonate to this day!

my 9800XT eventually fried the **** out, and by the time HL2 came out, I had upgraded to the X800XT PE, and while it played HL2 @ 1024x768 buttery smooth with almost full maxed settings, Doom3 did not fare nearly as well.

I had a 1,5Ghz AMD XP, 256MB of RAM and a POS geforce 4 MX440 (dx7, no shader support at all).

I could actually run both, Doom lowest settings at about 3-5fps, HL2 at 15-20fps, both at 800x600 or so.

Needless to say I didn't quite play them untill I got a better rig about a year later.
I did complete farcry on that computer, though looked and ran like utter crap as well.

I custom brought my system (xp, P4 3.6ghz, 2gb ram, radeon 9800256MB, kickass 5.1 sound system. spending a fortune amount of $$$, shocked to find it was just enough to max Far Cry, DOOM 3 & HL2 at 1280x1024. Well worth it. best games ever played on PC. My jaw literally dropped every time playing Far Cry. I couldn't believe how beautiful & detailed the game was for its time. I think technically HL2 had better, textures, lighting, & detailed water in some areas. But overall Far Cry looked so much better. Tonnes of replay value. I remember them "bragging" about DOOM 3 required 512MB Vram or something to unlock the highest setting on textures. And seeing some playing DOOM3 at 1600x1200 LCD. That seemed so big at the time.

It actually wouldn't max out Half Life 2 in the old version of Source...

I'd know because my 8600GT 512MB couldn't even max it out at 1440x900 resolution.
Look at your resolution, I was playing at 1024 with 2xQ AA. If you couldn't max out those games with an 8600GT, your CPU was either crap or you botched driver updates.

Mind you, my card was overclocked, and yes, it did max out those games.

I was running 2x 6800gt in sli with a good ole' fx51. I had just built the pc for Far Cry and it completely rolled through Doom 3 and HL2 on my old school 1600x1200 19" CRT.

Those were the days...
