First Build

Thread Starter
So I've got a decent gaming system at the moment, but it's starting to show its age and I've always wanted to put together my own rig. My budget is around $1,500, not including monitors, keyboards, etc. This rig will be used almost exclusively for gaming, so as long as the CPU can manage over 60FPS in most modern games I couldn't care less if it bottlenecks the GPU a bit (also keep in mind I'll be playing at 2560 X 1600).

At first I thought I'd shoot for $1,000 and came up with this list:

CPU: 2500K http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115072

GPU: Gtx 560Ti http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127565

PSU: Corsair 850W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139009

Case: NZXT Phantom http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-068-_-Product

HD: Caviar Blue 500GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136769

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-754-_-Product

Motherboard: MSI GD53 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...30572&Tpk=gd53

RAM: GSkill 2 X 2Gb 1600 DDR3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231277

Please point out any glaring issues and suggest upgrades/substitutions to move this build from ~$1,000 to ~$1,500. Thanks!

PS: I was thinking I would get a single card now and then go SLI later when prices come down, of course that means getting a heftier PSU...

i would go with this PSU, it is only $10 more and and extremely nice PSU... also, i would go with a bigger HDD, and upgrade ur GPU to something along the lines of an 570 or 580 (they will handle high res much better)... and finally... will you post the MOBO and RAM separately, because the deal is over

yikes if you are playing at 2560 X 1600 I would suggest a bigger card GTX 580 or 6950 and flash to 6970 if you want to save some money, sli or crossfire even. At that resolution, unless you dont care about maxing out your games, you definitely need a bigger card. Even I have a gtx 570 oced at 850 when I am only at 1920 x 1080

edit: tiger direct has the gtx 480 with accelero xtreme on it for 240 after coupon and rebates. maybe you should consider than instead or even sli these babies. fyi accelero xtreme is a beast of a cooler

I usually drop it down a bit from the native resolution if things get choppy, and I tolerate pretty low framerates for non-FPS games.

Wow, that GTX560 will certainly NOT live up to your expectations, unless you plan on no AA. No AA in this case is actually a good dicision becoz anti aliasing is basically just fake resolution, and since you are playing at such high resolution you should really consider turning off AA or purchasing a higher end card like the GTX580

Dude, Power, that CPU and Mobo combo is sick. Do these combo deals always last, or are they just like promo deals?

Thanks a ton PowerTrip, you're a pro. My only few questions:

1. Is an SSD really worth it? I don't really mind waiting another 20 seconds on boot up and it's not like I'll be installing my Steam library on a 64Gb SSD. Are there any other advantages?

2. Is 8Gb of RAM necessary for gaming these days?

3. That case isn't exactly... elegant. It is cheap and extremely well reviewed, however, so I'll go with it unless you think there's a prettier alternative...

1. SSD's really are worth it. Everything that is put on that SSD is going to be incredibly fast, and that is for a lack of words. For example, multiplayer games, you will have the map loaded and be on the map first. They are expensive though, and if money is tight for a build, an SSD is never recommended. They are EXTREMELY nice to have though.

2. 8GB is, for the average user, overkill. Unless you are going to be running multiple games at once, 4GB should be substantial. For me, I have 8GB, but I usually atleast two games open (MMO's with characters sitting in shop) 24/7.

3. I personally would get a CM HAF 922. It's only $100, and is an absolutely fantastic case in every way.
