Hi there guys i am in the middle of deciding between getting either 2 standard gtx 580's which a friend is giving me for $900 or a Gainward GTX 580 Phantom with 3 gig ddr 5 for $650.Now i just want to know what the people on this forum would suggest i get and i'd also like to know if the $250 difference ill be paying make a big enough difference to warrant it or should i go for the phantom edition single card? please any tips, ideas info would be greatly appreciated btw i am new to the forums sorry if this is the wrong section to post in.

Go for the 2 GTX 580s. Also, for only $50 more you can get 2 brand new ones with better coolers here ($950). I'm not sure how reputable this store is but Google reviews seem positive.

Don't bother with a 3GB 580. Its useless even for 2560 x 1600, and the 3GB would only help on 3 screens which a single 580 can't run. Get the SLI pair off your friend or if you are able to pay $50 more, get those Galaxy ones (and if you have 6 slots to use).

Hahaha, it is the wrong section but im sure a mod will move it!

Anyways, GTX580 SLI will dominate a Phantom. The only difference(s) between the two cards is that the phantom has a custom PCB, cooler and VRAM size.

What resolution are you gaming at? You won't need more than a standard single 580 with 1920x1080 setup.

I'm buying a phantom for my upcoming build but i only game on a single 24inch monitor!

I would have to suggest the SLI 580's for $900 thats a bargain (in Australia, anyway?) and will give you a massive e-peen.

The extra VRAM wont give you the performance of a SLI setup, so go for the standard ones, $450 a card is a pretty nice deal too.

At 2560x1600 and up I would get the 3gb card. At 1920x1200 I would just sli the reference 580s.

Yea the cards will take a total of 3 slots each, so 6. Most modern cases can support 6-7 so it's fine. If your motherboard has 2 spare slots between the PCI-express slots like this then you're fine.
