General Build/Upgrade Questions

Thread Starter
So, I'm looking at upgrading my current rig while keeping in mind the Bulldozers are coming out and I'd like to start getting components that I can use in my current build now and still have them be worthy of that BD goodness later, when I upgrade my MoBo + CPU. Until then, as for everything else...

I've been reading up about folding + water cooling and I'd like to get into both sooner or later, for sure. Mainly, the rig is used for Android compiling and development, SCII, heavy browsing and music/htpc and PhotoShop CS5(hardly). I'm just not sure in which order to get what components for my build! My overall budget could be seen as 200-300$ per piece (ie. wc,ram,psu,etc...)

The List of Things That'd Be Best:

Case - I want something that looks like this or this Lian Li or the NZXT looks alright but this Corsair 800D looks really nice too ^^! Suggestions please!

SSD - I dual boot Arch and Win7, so I'm wondering... Would it be better to get 2x64GB SSD's or 1x128GB? I have a SATA III / 6.0Gbps board, I'm pretty sure. I don't mind spending a little more on faster SSD stuffs.

Water Cooling - I've been drooling over The Water Cooling Picture Gallery and really like the stuff that EK has out. The XSPC Rasa looks cool too and I want something siiick, so suggest away!

PSU - 750/850W?

GPU - Should I crossfire another 5770 or should I upgrade the GPU? In time, I'd probably be getting a water block for it/them for the extra sex I'd get (of course).

RAM - Right now, I've got 4Gigs Mushkin 1333Mhz DDR3; I'm thinking 6 or 8 Gigs sounds about right, unless 4Gigs of really good stuff could be had. I've seen crazy deals on newegg I just want to know what's hot. Corsair Dominator GTs? Gskills? HyperBlu's?

Right now, my sig rig is in dire need of a new case and the Corsairs and Lian Li's look pretty cool but, I'm trying to keep Water Cooling in mind and I've never done that before! I'd like to keep the build AMD/ATi unless someone here can convince me to switch to Intel/Nvidia or something, unlikely!

I'd probably be getting the case and the SSD first, then start working on the Water Cooling setup and RAM. Then the PSU, then the GPU. That's what I'm thinking anyway but I'd like to know what the OCN commune thinks, too! Let me know, suggest me, point me to threads or just tell me google is my dear ol' pal. Forgot to mention I've been shopping for a mechanical keyboard too, but I think that's already been settled.

case: find something with great airflow, top/back/front/bottom fans, bottom mount psu
and lots of room if you want to go liquid, plexi side panel to show it off

ssd: wait for the next gen, current ones cannot max out sata2 controllers

psu: ~600w will be fine for most single card builds, ~800-1kw for dual gpu
fans/hdds/ssds/waterpump/ram ect.. dont take very much power
main draws are gpu/cpu

gpu: get a better card, its not tough to beat 2x5770 in crossfire with a single card anymore
ex. 2g 5870 when it was on sale for $160ar

ram: amd likes lower timings, 1333 cl7 is pretty close preformance to 1600 cl9
hyperx blu are great overclockers, can hit 2000 cl9-10 or 1333 cl6, best to run at 1600 cl8 (picked up a 2x2g set for a friend when they were $20ar)

i have this kit (Crucial Ballistix 1600 cl8 2 x 2GB kit) they were on sale for $35 shipped no rebate, currently running at 1500 cl7

A few thoughts on some of the components:
*psu: I've just read an article of a custom PC w/ a 4.5GHz 2500K and two OCed GTX 560Ti in SLI powered by a 650W PSU, 750W could be overkill for a single card
*SSD: a single drive would be helped by TRIM, a raid may degrade performance in tome due to the lack of TRIM
*case check out the Corsair 600D

It all starts with the case. Make sure you can mount the radiator, at least a 360 for your needs inside the case if you want the clean efficient look.
Gotta agree with the Crucial brand of memory, any of theirs is great and a U.S. company too.
Psu will depend some on case choice too, bottom or top mount, and modular or not as cable length and clutter to be considered.
Another 5770 would defiantly be enough I would think.
As far as water cooling that will be as crazy as you want to get. Check out the forums and ebay as you can get some great deals.
Good luck

In 3DMark or other systhetic benchmarks. Does he need hardware than must beat any other hardwares in 3DMarks? Performance in Vantage or 11 is not all o.O No! If You want CF just go with second 5770, I'm sure You'll be happy.

If you look through the NZXT Phantom Club link in my sig, you'll find some pictures of folks who have replaced the side mesh screen with a window and mounted 360 radiators in the top of the case. I don't know if you're into the look of that case, but the price is pretty good and it sounds like it would probably work for what you want.

just saying that a new 5770 is about $100-120
if he can sell it for $60 and get the 2g 5870 for about another $100
then have a slot open for crossfire with those in the future when they get cheaper
