e8400 + p5q overclocking advice/help

Hey Everybody!

I am a first time overclocker and looking for some help/advice.

A bit of a background:
-I have read through alot of the intel overclocking guides
-I am a computer engineer and computer enthusiast.
-I have used alot of the available monitoring tools in the past.

My PC (Just built):

e8400
Asus P5Q
4 gb (2x 2gb) PC2-8500 GSkill
4870x2
700 watt OCZ ModXStream Pro

Current overclock:

Currently i have overclocked my cpu to 4.185 Ghz - 465FSB x9 multi @ 1.39375V.
I have manually set the ram to 2.1 volts and timing 5-5-5-15
Since my mobo does not allow you to change the CPU/DRAM ratio my ram is running @ 465.

What i would like to manually set is the NB Voltage and the CPU PLL voltage, currently they are auto.

Unfortunately my mobo does not have a NB Voltage sensor, and it is currently set to AUTO, so i can only guess what the voltage would be. I am trying to figure out what the stock NB Voltage is and then work my way up to a stable voltage.

Does anyone know what the stock NB Voltage is for e8400 + Asus P5Q?
Does anyone know what the stock CPU PLL Voltage is for e8400 + Asus P5Q?

Also, how do i utilize my ram past 465 (seeing as it can handle 533 without oc) with a locked CPU/DRAM ratio?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
-Mausimo

On my Quad + P5Q Deluxe, I use 463x8. I found using a 2.4x multiplier on the RAM gave better stability than running 1:1. My RAM runs 1112Mhz. I believe this is the 400 strap? I left my STRAP at AUTO and selected 1112Mhz manually for RAM Freq.

I think the stock NB on my Deluxe is 1.2v, but I'm not 100%. However, Auto does not mean stock, I dont think. You should set it manually. I would try like 1.36-1.38v, should be plenty for 465FSB. Your Dual core might even take less than my Quad, I'm not sure. Once you know that its stable, back it down until you find the limit.

Is your P5Q a vanilla? There are so many P5Q variants.

Might be better if you listed all your BIOS settings or take a picture of your BIOS and post it.

I hope to move my P5Q-D to my E8400 setup also, as I just scored a EP45 UD3R which I'm going to use on my Quad now. smile.gif

Thanks for the reply, as far as i know it is a standard "P5Q" no variation. However i will double check the box at home.

I will definitely play around with the NB tonight. I don't want it overheating as the stock cooler might not be good enough. However, after benchmarking yesterday i put my hand against the NB heat sink and it was warm to the touch.

My side case fan which blows on the graphics card, also hits the NB (top portion of the fan), i hope this is good enough cooling.

Set these:

NB Voltage = 1.36V *should be enough for way beyond 500MHz FSB and it's safe to use)

PLL Voltage = 1.54V

FSB Termination voltage = 1.30V

CPU GTL= 0.63x (if you have this in BIOS)

For the RAM speed just set DRAM frequency option to what you want..

For example the next step would be 1116MHz (FSB:RAM=5:6 and FSB = 465MHz)

CHEERS..

Hey KingT,

Is 1.36 NB safe for the stock cooler on the P5Q NB? I know, the P5Q-E and -PRO have nice heat-pipe NB coolers where as the P5Q does not.

Thanks for your reply and info,
-Mausimo

I was able to get a stable overclock:

reported by CPU-Z:

4.14 GHz @ 460 MHz FSB
Vcore = 1.376v idle, 1.386 underload
NB = 1.2v
Memory 552 MHz 5-5-5-15 2.1v

Ran Prime95 for an hour 1/2. I will let a longer test run while at work tommorow.

Yes it's perfectly safe to use 1.36V NB on your mobo..
