9800gt freeze

Thread Starter
Hello.I'm owner of Point Of View 9800gt 1GB.
The problem is when i was playing games the gpu overheated and froze.the pc was still on but the screen had green dots.Temps on idle 48 100% load 81 and rising. So i bought this VGA Cooler to decrease the temps.Temps on idle 34 100% load 44.But new problem came up.Now when i'm on idle or watching videos or playing games the screen freezes remember pc is still on only screen freezes without any dots.My psu is Asus A-45GA 450w.So i came up with 2 ideas.1)Card died means i have to buy new card(Going for Asus HD5670) 2)I have to buy a new psu with more wats because this can't handle the VGA Cooler. Also one more tip i don't think card died because i decreased the clocks of the card and the pc is on 3 hours now with no freeze(i think that means if u lower the clocks u lower the psu consumption too if i'm correct).

vopj00.png

So what to do? buy a new psu(if indeed new psu is the solution) or buy the Asus HD5670.Thanks

PS:i also installed the new drivers 266.58 but nothing

sounds like your 9800 is half way dead the 9800 beats the 5670 in most benchmarks.

oh usually when a video card freezes or crashes at stock and is fine underclocked it means the card is failing and is no longer stable at stock clocks. 450 watts is more than enough for a 9800GT

i was personally looking into a radeon 5770 it is alot faster than the 8800GT/9800GT (same card rebranded) so if you can manage $140 then go for the 5770.

if it isn't stable at stock clocks then leave it underclocked

I suggest a GTX 260. But it's minimum is 500watt. It's a decent card for the times, and can run games significantly better than a 9800 GT, especially with AA on.

your temps are not that high , compared to mine (before i bought an aftermarket cooler , which doesn't do too much) .

I am playing GTAIV and i see it getting up to 91-93 degrees celsius . from 94 up it starts artifacting . still , mine is quite overclocked . the aftermarket cooler decreased idle temps from ~50 to ~47 and loads are dropped by about 5 .

So i don't know if it's the temps ..
