New headphones and possible sound card? - Page 2

Beyerdynamic DT 770 80-Ohm (only for those that like bass, like me).
Audio Technica ATH-A700 (cheaper then DT-770)
Asus Xonar DG (should beat any on board sound)
or a $60 tube headphone amp. off eBay.

For instance, AD700s on onboard is a terrible boring experience.

AD700s on a sound card is on a whole new level. Almost anyone that's had headphones with on board and then moved onto a sound card will tell you the same.

I think the Denon D1100's are difficult to beat for his price range and music tastes. Who knows how long this deal on the ST/STX will last, so he should jump on it while it's 2/3's the price normally (66 dollars or so off total price).

He really won't have to upgrade source in the future unless he moves up to really high end headphones.

But what do you all offer him in the 200-250 dollar range that fits his music tastes and is better than Denon 1100s?
I can understand why you may disagree. However, even with on-board audio I believe that there will be a significant difference going from $20 Skull Candy headphones to $100 HD555's or AD700's. I'm not sure how much better Skull Candy headphones would sound with a better source. I wish I had a pair to test right now.

Simple test is to simply take your headphones and listen to them on onboard, then listen to them with your sound card.

Works pretty similar with all headphones, except the higher quality they are the better they will sound with a better source.
