Overclocking X4 965 + M4N98TD Evo Help - Page 3

I'm running a similar setup with mult at 16.5 and fsb at 250... This seems to be the sweet spot for mine. Raising the mult while lowering the fsb in any combination causes me bsod. Vcore is at 1.5

This might be your shot.

Pete, do you have LLC on? Is that 1.5v in the BIOS or under load as measured in Windows?

Wow, if I set it at 1.5 in the bios I am lucky if I see 1.4 during prime...

Is there any way to eliminate this amount of droop?

There might be some sort of volt mods...But I wouldn't know anything about that. Does ASUS have a BIOS update for your motherboard? Maybe they added LLC as a feature...

I'm pretty sure I have the latest version as I updated my bios 2 days prior to starting this thread.

From the research I've done, this board has not had LLC added as a feature in anyway.

What is the danger of raising my voltage above 1.55V if the droop is nearly .1 under load?

And I'm still looking for a little bit of clarification on the limit of safe temperatures for my 965 (whether its the core or cpu temp)?

Anyway, still working on it.

Well, here's the thing about not having LLC and why that's bad.

On my board, I set my CPU vcore to 1.45v in the BIOS, and it reports a value (depending on load) anywhere from 1.44v-1.46v. Pretty reasonable fluctuation.

On your board, you set the CPU vcore to 1.55v and end up getting maybe 1.45v. As you mentioned, that's .1v vdroop.

On my board at idle, I'm running 1.45v. On my board at load, I'm running 1.45v.

On your board at idle, you're running 1.55v. On your board at load, you're running 1.45v.

See the problem? Not having LLC makes your idle voltage way too high for 24/7 use, causing unecessary heat and wear. On load, your voltage is too low, causing instability. Without LLC, you have to overcompensate voltage, running way more volts at idle than you actually need just to compensate for load.

I suppose you can try and run 1.6v, in the hopes that your load ends up being in the neighborhood of 1.5v, but it depends on how long you want this chip to last. As I said, people on here do it (it won't instantly fry your chip or anything, but you are outside of AMD's specifications).

As far as temperatures go...I've read documents from AMD (can't find them at the moment) that say go with "CPU Temp". As I understand it, Core Temp is a calculated value (not a measured value with a sensor) and can be off sometimes.

Good luck!

Safe temps for this chip are below 62c... It is recommended to load around 55c

Also, download asus probe II... It shows a bit more than cpuz

i have the same chip but a different board an M4n75TD. it has a setting called Nvidia Core Calibration under the Advanced tab (should be your boards version of LLC). Play around with that and tell us how far you go. I have had no luck reaching 4Ghz so i settled for 3.8, but i'll play around with it abit more when i get back from work.
