Looking for an 8 port gigabit router with wireless N...does it exist?

Thread Starter
Recently my dorm mates and I have all been playing games together and we are wanting to get an 8 port router for our room. The current 4 port router w/ broken wireless isn't cutting it anymore for my desktop, our laptops, and 2 xbox's.

I've found something that will satisfy the requirements and isn't terribly expensive...

http://www.officedepot.com/a/product...32-Wireless-N/

However it doesn't have gigabit ports, anyone know of anything similar but has gigabit ports? Alternatively, in terms of media sharing between xbox's computers and lan playing, will having gigabit over 100mb be a significant difference?

Yeah that router looks good enough for the price however, If it is possible for you and your friends to all be wired, why not just buy a switch box?
Also, If your internet provider is Sky or Virgin Media xD, You can ask for a free router(Just a suggestion)
Finally, A Gigabit will make a slight difference of media sharing but not enough to really appreciate it, unless the files are over 4GB. But thats just in my opinon.

How it helps .

Well depending on what types of files you'll be sharing and how fast your hard drives, the theoretical transfer limit on a 100mbps connection is 12.5MB/s while on a gigabit connection it would be somewhere between 30-50MB/s, which is a big speed boost if you transfer files a lot.

You could just buy a 4/8 port switch and connect it to the router you have now for extra ports.

I've thought about getting an 8 port switch and just hooking it up to the router, but since the wifi stopped functioning on the current router and it's just a simple abg router, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get an "N" router. I'd rather just get something that I'll use in the future/wifi when not gaming, not as just a switch that will only be used as gaming.

Well I guess I will continue my search for a gigabit router and see if the extra $ will be worth it. Thanks guys

Oh and I'm in a dorm so I'm not really sure who provides the Internet for my University, but I doubt they'd be willing to shell out free routers haha

You likely aren't going to find an 8 port 'router' that's at least in a general price range.

Consumer grade 'wireless routers' are actually a 3 in 1 device consisting of a router, switch and wireless access point. You'd be better off hanging a switch off of either your current router, or buying a replacement router as well as a switch. If it is just for internet connectivity you won't notice a difference between gigabit and 10/100.

Gigabit is basically useful for LAN transfers. 10/100 is limited to ~12 MB/sec while Gigabit scales up to around 110-115 MB/sec real world performance (125 MB/sec theoretical maximum).
