Simple Hybrid SLi Question

Thread Starter
I feal like a total noob for asking this....

I know with hybrid SLi you can combine two different video cards in SLi mode.

Does any motherboard that supports regular SLi also support Hybrid SLi?

I have a Asus M2N-E (yes i know it's ancient) i want to know if i can run Hybrid SLi on it.

by the looks of Asus's specs id say no, its a fairly old board and i dont think that hybrid was around when it was produced, also the nForce 500 series chipset doesnt seem to support it either.

Also if hybrid sli is anything like hybrid crossfire it would be useless as your fastest card would be limited to the speeds of the slower card when in sli mode

Hybrid SLI does not mean putting 2 different discrete graphics cards together to form SLI.
It means, putting an onboard Nvidia graphics chipset with another discrete graphics card to do SLI. See pic below.

And, as the Asus M2N-E does not have a built-in onboard graphics chipset, it cannot support Hybrid SLI.

So what's putting 2 different nvidia graphics cards in one system called? Is it even possible? I'm also interest in this question

SLI.

And yes, it's very much possible.

I did some reading and digging around, and you can combine two different cards in SLi. What i was thinking of was "mixed SLi" not "hybrid SLi".

"In an SLI configuration, cards can be of mixed manufacturers, card model names, BIOS revisions or clock speeds. However, they must be of the same GPU series (e.g. 8600, 8800) and GPU model name (e.g. GT, GTS, GTX).[20] There are rare exceptions for "mixed SLI" configurations on some cards that only have a matching core codename (e.g. G70, G73, G80, etc.), but this is otherwise not possible, and only happens when two matched cards differ only very slightly, an example being a differing amount of video memory, stream processors, or clockspeed. In this case, the slower/lesser card becomes dominant, and the other card matches. Another exception is the GTS 250, which can SLI with the 9800 GTX+, as the GTS 250 GPU is a rebadged 9800 GTX+ GPU."

Okay, Crimson. So you meant 'mixed SLI' ... but now what is your question?

TTBOMK the only card you could SLi your 8800GT with is another 8800GT, or probably a 9800GT (although a bios flash on one of the cards may be required, not sure). Any SLi board supports 'mixed SLi', but there's very few cards that can be 'mixed' ... they both basically have to have the same GPU (such as 8800GT/9800GT or GTS250/9800GTX).

Then there's boards with the Hydra chipset (MSI Big Bang Fusion is one) that allow 'mixed SLi' with just about any two nV cards ... but the performance is really not on par with 'real' SLi from what I've seen.
