Windows explorer has stopped working

Thread Starter
Hi,

I bought a Alienware M11x (I tried asking in notebookreview forum but no succsess) laptop some weeks ago and started experiencing this error 2 times every day. I also tried changing drivers and make sure everything is up to date, still get the error sometimes

Happens mostly when I am going to adjust the volume in the right corner of the screen, or just clicking the bar. Once I press it the mouse pointer starts working and I cant click on he start menu or on any of the icons on the bar below as windows explorer stops working. I am still able to move the mouse pointer, but all windows stuff goes away.

I decided to change the harddrive and do a reinstall of windows 7, so I did, but I keep getting this error every once in a while. Sometimes another message also appears saying Microsoft windows has stopped working.

I just had this problem an hour ago, and I usually just hold down the power botton to restart the computer, but pressing fn + f4 to adjust screen brightness made the error go away and windows came back.

I hope you understand what I mean, and hopefully I can get this annoying problem away.

Edit: It just happened again and pressing fn + F4/f5 really works everytime. That is so weird. Still, I get this error a lot now and it doesn't seem normal.

I had this problem with wireless network drivers on a 19" notebook we have.

What I did was ctrl-alt-del kill explorer
then either use task manager to run a new explorer or press windows-r and type explorer

maybe your drivers or bios settings are not correct for standby/hibernate (even though that does not seem linked to your brightness fixing the problem)

sorry HTH
