Athlon X2 64 temps help!

Thread Starter
I reinstalled my proc (Athlon 64X2 "Kuma", underclock to 2.4GHz), and put some arctic silver 5 on it. I put on two very thin lines, and I then smeared it around with my fingertips. It left a very thin and smooth layer on the processor surface, and I then reinstalled the cooler. I ziptied an aftermarket fan to it, on top of the stock one. I booted up, ran Hmonitor and Prime95, and within 7 or 8 minutes, jumped from 40C idle to 63C! Is normal/safe?

perfectly normal while stress testing.

Keep in mind though that during normal use and while gaming, you won't see temps that high as gaming doesn't use 100% of your cpu's duty cycle.

Kuma - is it a 7550?

what's the room temperature? if its 30c then 40c at idle is just right

It's amazing what good case airflow can do. Do you have an exhaust fan? My brother had the 4400+ and when under load it would get up to 73C (it had no case fans) After I installed a basic exhaust fan, the load temp went down to ~56C

Thats not a very good idea.

You should just put a rise sized dot in the middle(or a line, whatever, just don't smear it with your fingers) and apply the heat sink.

Do you have the 7850?I own one 7750 and thats the hottest chip i've seen(after the 5000+)The underclock doesnt help, ive tryed that too,set the voltage in the bios manualy and set it to 1.3v(mines was 1.3 and the mobo overvolted)the boot in win stress and watsh the temps. Are you with the box cooler,if yes go buy an AC Freezer 64Pro,this cooler cooled my 7750 very good we are talking about a temps 30idle an 42max when stressing the cpu.And if your case lets you make it a push\\pull its easy with the AC because you can rottate it,set the Ac this way:
Make the AC exaust at the back of the Case, then put one 120mm,92mm,80mm what ever your case lets you(better 120mm)At the back of the case and set it at exaust(to move the hot air comming from the cpu out)Another good cooler is AC freezer 7pro but it runs little hotter with the 7750 but still a good choice. You can buy what ever cooler you want those above are just the ones ive tried.Sry for the bad english

You shouldn't smear the thermal paste on the CPU with your fingers or any other objects. The spread method can leave air bubbles within the thermal paste as you place the HSF on your CPU. This can make less heat transfer out of your CPU.

I would recommend doing two thin lines again as you did before or a pea sized dot in the middle with thermal paste. One or the other should work fine.

As i say earlyear those chips are hot!Go and buy an aftermarket cooler something like Ac Freezer 64Pro its good ive got it,and it cools the cpu well! And see the bios those asus boards overvolts mine old was m3a78-em and it overvolted just set the cpu vcore voltage manualy to 1.3v and turn on q'n'q it helps if you're not overclocking!but with these temps please dont OC!And if you plan to underclock dont,it really doesnt help
