Considering 6990+6970

I'm in need of a new rig badly and the GPU setup is really the only thing I'm undecided about. A 6990 and 6970 in trifire and throwing them both under water is what I'm considering.

I just have one concern. I'll be on a p67 board so if I did my research correctly both the cards will be running on 8x lanes. Now I know when it comes to single cards going from 16x to 8x is only a few percent difference. But how will it affect a dual card like a 6990? I don't want to waste hundreds of dollars on these 2 cards to find out the 6990 is severely hindered by a p67 board.

I don't understand lane bandwidth very well sorry for being a noob

Any input is appreciated. Thanks guys.

you would do very nicely with the setup you have planned. the pci lane difference between 16x and 8x is like you said, very small and nothing to worry about.

you could also try just the 6990 out first and see if you need more gpu power than that. running one gpu (whether or not it is a dual-gpu card) will run at 16x on the p67 boards.

another thing to consider: if you aren't planning on running three monitors (or one really big monitor), all this gpu power is kind of a waste.

Well Currently I run 2560x1600 and might run with additional monitors down the road. So i'll end up getting my moneys worth.

So a dual card on a 8x lane will be fine then? If all i'm losing is like 2% performance like the single cards do, I'm 100% fine with that

good to hear you are on a bigger resolution monitor. the 6990 will do well for sure.

yes, running dual gpu's each at 8x will be just fine.

time for you to do some parts ordering.

The difference is minimal. Time to order parts and post pictures!
