You can convert the MKV file to .m4v using handbrake really easy in use ect.
You can also convert to other file formats, there are different kind of preset configurations.

For MKV files, there's actually a much easier method, using mkv2vob. Takes much less time than handbrake to an m4v. And it was designed specifically to bring this compatibility to ps3

I used to do files that were ~1.5gb and it took only a few minutes using "x264 (slow)" setting

I've used TVersity with no problems at all, it is very easy to setup and uses your home wireless network to xfer videos and stream media. I use my PS3 as another HDD for playing movies, tv shows, etc.

thanks for the advice.

i didn't look at the dated date in that thread - probably too old and won't work anyways.

may i ask what file format are your files when you usually stream? AVI?
Well I started archiving when DivX/XviD (in AVI) were all the rage and not everything played mp4. Now DivX is starting to lose steam (handbrake apparently removed support for it) but the bulk of my archive is still DivX. Any new stuff will most likely be mp4 or I'll just leave it as a giant VOB file. Of course since getting the roku box there's been less and less reason to worry about it at all

So to answer your question I stream DivX from my WHS with no issues, looks perfect. Newer stuff is MP4, also works perfectly. But I use my TV's speakers and have small enough screen I can't tell HD from not from a distance anyway so I may not be the perfect model to go from.

I believe (someone will correct me I assume) this is so you have saw a big collection of avi/divx movies you don't have to go through and convert them to a compatible PS3 format, it just converts it as it plays. I tried to set something similar up once, never did work.

Anyway I haven't read the latest specs of what the PS3 can play these days. Do you really need that feature? According to this PS3 page it plays a great number of formats, including various mpegs and divx. I don't think it's really necessary any longer.

This post is actually dated from 2007. And it's to use the native technology for streaming. Which isn't really good if you ask me. At least I couldn't get it to work consistently so I disabled "media connect" and installed WMP to use UPnP for the streaming, which is covered in a convenient wiki.

You only have to do the magic for WMP once and you should be good. I assume you aren't afraid of a little registry tweaking...
hrm this step was a bit confusing

Run "wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe /T:C:\\WMP11 /C" to extract the contents to "C:\\WMP11"

i put both winrar and wmp11 on server. installed winrar, but when installing WMP, it wont install. i have also extracted the files to C:\\WMP11
