For all we know it could need TriSLI GTX580s to play on medium, or it could be the same as BC2.

Now, if i had to guess, this game would be a VRAM and CPU bottlenecked. I'd expect the 6970 to shine over the GTX580 at 1080P. again, just a guess.

It doesn't seem to look more demanding on actual GPU power, but the textures and explosions may bottleneck.
No way at 1080p the 6970 is going to beat the 580. It has less then 500 more MB. The 580 outguns it in horsepower which is what matters. Does the 6970 beat the 580 running the ridiculously demanding heaven at 1080p?

Not going to go into fanboy debate.

If BF3 uses more than 1500MB of textures at 1080P max, then the 6970s frame buffer will not be slowed, but the GTX580 will bottleneck.

Are you serious? What did I say that makes me a "fanboy"? The GTX580 has more horsepower and shows it by beating the 6970, there is a reason it is expensive as it is. Just ran Uniengine heaven completely maxed at 1080P and it used 1034MB max, highly doubt at 1080P that BF3 will use more then that.

Please see this bench that shows the 580 beating the 6970 at Enthusiast Quality on Crysis Warhead at 2500 x 1600. If it does not become VRAM bottle necked by that resolution at such a demanding game as Warhead, no way that at 1080P BF3 will use all it's VRAM and cause a bottleneck.

When I think BF, I think multiplayer, which needs to be 60fps.
I think dragon age 2 will be the most demanding. I get more frames in metro 2033 than that game lol.

Then, upgrade time rolled around and I did a core upgrade to a Q6600 X38 setup and I saw some improvements, I could take it up a few more notches and actually saw the improvements. It wasn't like I just saw a number jump from 130 -> 175, I could see more details, more effects etc.

Again, upgrade time rolled around and I got a 4870 X2 and I could finally max it out but at pretty poor framerates. I got the Q9650 and overclocked it to 3.9GHz and again saw some improvements in the game. It really made my upgrade experience a joy and a pleasure. I wasn't just upgrading my hardware and seeing framerates going up and up, I was actually seeing a better game each time.

It seems to me that a lot of people hate a game if they can't run it maxed out on release day but that, to me, is great. It means I can revisit the game with a better setup in the future and experience a better looking game each time. If Battlefield 3 does this for me then I'm going to love it.

Anyone else feel this way?
Definitely. I still revisit the original Crysis with an ultra-high config from time to time. My current framerate with this config is pretty bad with 8xAA, so I'm only waiting for my 2500k to arrive in order to play it all the way through once again, but smoother and better looking this time. Can't wait!

like other BF games, it will probably run smooth on a range of systems.. It's multiplayer that will bring them to their knees lol.
Like just about any game that comes out forums will be flooded with complaints about bugs/poor performance for months but I am sure it will eventually be a great game.
Just a shame EA will probably fragment it with DLC add on packs.
Shame, I thought they had learned their lesson from BF2, expansions could have killed that game. More and more people were turning to Mod's instead of expansions and I thought they had turned a corner when they released expansions within 1.5 patch.

Hope it won't turn out as Crysis 2.

I wouldn't mind if BF3 is not the prettiest looking game ever, as long as it brings all the core and develops new features which make BF3 a true BF game, that is superb multiplayer experience.
